View Full Version : Whats the deal with Vista-64's insane amount of processes... PIC!!!

So I went into Task Manager today and not only do I have 74 processes running, but many are multiple instances of the same thing!

I even counted 12 (TWELVE!!!) of the SVCHOST.EXE!! One of these actually uses over 200mb of ram!!! All added up, the 12 instances use over 300mb+

I'm brand new to Vista and my recent purchase of Vista 64-bit, but I find this amount of memory hogging crap to be rediculous!

I un-clicked the box which said "show processes from all users" and all the SVCHOST.exe processes disappeared yet i still show 74 processes running.

Could any of this be due to a habit by 64-bit Vista passing out un-used RAM considering I've got 6gb installed in my PC???

Here is a screenshot of the chaos!

I changed Azureus and a few other things but I'm still getting like 12 instances of SVCHOST.EXE which is a "host process for Windows Services.

My own processes ("user Name") only account for 23 of them and perhaps 175mb total ram allocated. Most of the big hitters are like Office Outlook, Desktop Windows Manager, nVidia RAID, Explorer, Everest Ultimate (damn.... 18mb), Nero Home (which i'm getting rid of right now).... and the rest are relatively small......

thats all of your network services

and go into ur administrative tools and clean out ur services before u delete apps just disable the services then they will launch with the apps and not sit in the processes

vista is made like unix u have to be smarter than an xp user for it to work rite, and when u install things u have to set up the execution of its services or they just run wild

If you go into services.msc and disable all the crap you should end up with less. That being said even when im not running anything i still have 30 processes standard.

Ok.... i disabled a couple and need to reboot in a second... and here is what is currently left. Keep in mind that i was running Outlook, AIM, Steam, Everest Ultimate, AVG, and a few other programs.

What in here can i disable without having to worry about things going haywire?

Edit: I'm now down form 74 processes to a much lower 58 processes. So if any of you guys can recommend which services I posted above can be safely removed, i'd appreciate it!

Thanks everyone!

blue tooth and windows fire wall, security center, and disable auto update in avg

that will take out 4 more (DONT DO BLUE TOOTH IF U USE IT)

windows update, o&o, print spooler, security center can be set to automatic with delayed start so that u dont turn them on until u use them

Excellent advice. I just did everything you recommended except i cannot get the print spooler to set to Automatic (with delay).

Also, I use bluetooth for my Logitech DiNovo Laser Media Desktop. So that stays.

I haven't disabled superfetch as of now. I didn't read much in guides which say I should disable.
