On my next system upgrade I was thinking of going to vista. The only thing I am worried about is my monitor. I have a samsung 19" LCD I got about 2 years ago, before vista was out. I was told by a friend that it would be fine, because its just a thing microsoft is doing to get people to buy new monitors or something. He says that his monitor was one of the first LCD's on the market and he has no problem with Vista (playing games, watching videos, etc).
I know it has something to do with a feature your monitor must have, or it will distort your movies. But I get the feeling that almost all LCD monitors already have this feature.
I would like to hear your input on this. Is my samsung going to be ok? or do I have to buy a new monitor to enjoy vista?
you can use any monitor. you can run vista on any computer that has enough memory and speed.
vista certified is MS being gay.

Thats good. My PC will have 2gigs of RAM, a Q6600, and a 8800GTS. It should be fine with vista, even if the RAM is a little low. Because all the game requirements say you should have 3 gigs if you run with vista, and 2 with XP.

lol, Vista certified monitors...
I think Vista certification for monitors means they had to include HDCP capabilities for Vista Home Premium and up, but if you're running Vista Home Basic you don't need the HDCP to have a Vista certified monitor.
Really, it's stupid. It makes things confusing for even tech heads, and you should know whether you need/want HDCP/HDMI or not, whether than have Microsoft tell you.
So, bottom line, you can use any monitor, really.

I was going to get this http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16832116204
because thats the one my friend said he got and it works fine. Do you have a better version to recommend me? because from what you said if I get the Home Premium I might not be able to use my monitor (because im not sure what "features" it has). I want a 64-bit though, for the RAM. ( 64 bit lets you have more than 4gigs of RAM right? or is it 2? -_-)
64bit lets u have over 3gb. 32bit only reads about 3gb... you can have like 16gb in 64bit vista. i am not familiar with vista versions sorry.

Vista 32 bit is limited to 2.92Ghz or so of memory. As for the monitor, I plugged in an old 14" CRT from 1994 and it worked fine for me under Vista. Vista ready has only effected my webcam, every other piece of hardware I own runs under Vista.

most mobos out support 8 gigs of ram...unless you go with server mobos, and you can use way over 16gb's ;)

FALSE!
Windows XP and Vista 32-bit both support a full 4 gigs of RAM, the fact that it does not display it as usable (and in fact it is not user usable) simply furthers the myth that they can't. Not sure how Vista handles it exactly, but for XP it lops off an amount which it dedicates for OS usage, and displays what is open for user data. Rest assured, it is all being used however.

2.92GHz you say? Not GB? :p:
Other than that, read the post above. The exact amount it lops off in each case, stragely, does vary from PC to PC... I'm sure it has something to do with what's installed, but MS has never released a very detailed explanation. My computer, for example, displays 3.5GB of my 4GB available, so definitely more than 2.92 is possible.

Exactly what I said when I got my monitor out of the box and it had a Vista Certified sticker. Then I put the sticker on my laptop :yepp:
