cant access LAN cmputers from each other

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

basically trying to transfer files between my 2 computers on LAN. I ran xp netwrok setup to make them both computers that connect through router.

both are assigned respective IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 as the default gateway is 192.168.1.1

when I go to network places I can only see the folders being shared on the computer im on, never the other's ones. I can ping comp1s IP and name from comp2 but from comp1 I can only ping the IP of comp2, the name doesnt work.

I think ive turned all the setting I need on but would appreciate some help as ive been trying for 2 days now and not any closer to getting it to work.

pulling my damned hair out!

First check they are all in the same workgroup.
Do not join a domain if it asks you.
(control panel->system->computer name)

Secondly Disable simple file sharing
From any explorer window (EXPLORER not Internet Explorer)
Tool->folder options->view->untick "enable simple file sharing"

thirdly make sure you have the same user account get up on all pcs.
e.g. setup yourself on each computer all with the same username and password.

If you cant get this to work - jsut grab filezilla ftp server and client and ftp it from your machines...it will be faster anyway. :)

when you see the files on your on computer ignore that look over to the left ther eis a link for "workgroup computers"
click that and then it will show all computers and all domains or workgroups.

make sure both computers are on the same workgroup.
some use MShome as default some use Workgroup as the defualt name
XP's defualt name is Workgroup so there shouldnt be an issue but.

you also need to setup windows firewall for file and print sharing, or do the right thing and just turn it all the way off.

the thing i mentioned first is all you really need to do, just going to network places never ever shows everything. clicking "workgroup computers" is the trick.
