Has got to, i have the same board and it works fine for me.

I had to select optiarc blah blah or something for optical drive.

Do you have J-Micron controller enabled?

Is your optical drive recognized in bios?

yes it's recognized ... it's an lg and works ok .. in windows ...
at boot in bios if i leave floppy then hdd, witch is on s-ata , i have no problems , but if i change the order .. lets say my optical drive ide: hl-dt .. blah..blah and then the hdd .. the computer will not boot , i mean it powers on and the screen is black ... and then if i shut it down .. and then power on again , it will boot from the dvd :D ... but i havent tried 2 install yet.. cause who knows what might happen :D ... what bios u have ?

i have this with my p5b put the ide dvd rw as first boot device and dont have hdd as a boot device atall

it should then boot off the cd without issue, i think it is an issue with sata and asus boards or the bios i is using but hidy ho has worked for me on more than one asus board

That's pretty odd.

My board came with bios 0401 but i flashed to 0503 to get the strap to northbridge option.

Worked with both though.

My DVD rewriter is a NEC and it has also IDE interface.

What happens if you disconnect floppy and Sata drives?
