help!!!! ok so heres what i know:

-I have used this device before on this same computer connected to the same router, and it stopped working when i was playing Halo and it froze, the whole story of that is in another thread i made heres the link: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=162590 If you read that, everything is back to normal now, except sometimes the taskbar goes oldschool randomly, and of course the internet is not working

- Its not the device, i installed it on another comp and it works fine (which also mean the routers' wireless is working)

-May be my hard drive, it has been randomly deleting things,
ex. like for some reason music in itunes wont play, but sound works fine,
ex. paint and calculator are gone... and i didn't delete their files
ex. for some reason volume control left us, so we reinstalled the drivers for sound and now we got it back.
so my question here is: what could my hard drive have deleted to cause this? in other words what is necessary for wireless to work?

-Also whenever i boot up my comp i have to disable then enable my audio drivers in order for the sound to work

-The device cannot detect my ip address (see network connection details pic), but it can detect it on other comps

-Appeared one day in network connections and the two little comps at the left of the taskbar were there, and i could check the status, properties, etc. Now i get nothing. The 3 jpegs were of when it did get that, but it was still not the full info (see details pic), and it could receive no packets (see wireless network connection 31 status pic), and when i tried to repair it said The following steps failed:
Renewing the IP address.
Refreshing all DHCP leases and re-registering DNS names.
(see repair connection pic)
Sometimes i will only get the Renewing the IP address. error, and the DCHP one doesnt come up.

-Edit:So now it was working like it was before (like it is in the pics), and i noticed i had like 5 svchost.exe running, so i ended a few of them, (i figured i could get rid of all but one), a Message came up, it told me it had to shutdown and it counted down from 1 minute, it said it was b/c Remote Procedure Call (RPC) was terminated unexpectedly. It said the shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM

-Whenever i start up my comp svchost.exe is taking up 100% of my processor, so i end the process

-I have not tried to connect my router directly to this comp (LAN) b/c that would be too much of a hassle, i will though if you think its necessary, to figure out more about it.

My best guess is that something important on my hard drive got deleted, but then again i dont know very much.

Note: I have Windows Xp Home, SP1

PLZ PLZ post any ideas you have, i am completely stumped. All new info is underlined

first of all get sP2 installed, you should have been doing this a year ago.
2nd. usb wifi adapters are crap go get yourself a pci card or a wireless AP and put it into client mode and then come out of it with cat5 and into your pc.

i am not going to sit here and preach to you about this or that, it's your pc.

you can boot to the recovery console and do a chkdsk /r to see if it can find some bad or missing files.
but i wouldnt even bother.

something happened when your pc crashed, plain and simple, and you lost alot of vital components for some reason.

have you uninstalled and reinstalled the crappy usb adapter?

if i was you, i'd just reload your pc, yeah you heard me right, just reload it.
god knows what happened, god knows what else is missing or corrupt, just do a total reformat and reload and this time install SP2.

installing SP2 might fix it, who knows, you may not need to reload, try it, SP2 is only going to help your windows.

odd i came across something today at work, i didnt forward it to myself here at home but i will tommorrow, it doesnt coorilate to your adapter but it does coorilate to your issue.

turn off all wifi encryption and see if your able to get an IP address.
if you are there is something going on with the encryption mehod of either your card or the software.
since you confirmed it worked in another pc then i must point the finger at the software or windows.

uninstall the card software and reinstall.
if this doesnt work then just reload windows or try installing SP2 first then if its stil broke reinstall.

as i mentioned something happened when your pc crashed and it took with it a number of key files.

ok so how do i turn off wifi encryption, i dont think it is that tho b/c my brother can get online with his wii and thats wireless.

When you say i need to reload windows, does that mean refresh my hard drive? B/c the only time ive ever reinstalled windows it deleted everything else on my hard drive (i knew like nothing back then, it doesnt make sense that it would do that, but it did). In a few days my new hard drive should be coming in the mail and i just planned to take my old one out, stick the new one in, use the system recovery disks to install windows and then use norton ghost to transfer everything (except windows) from new to old. Do you think that that will work? Note: Im also getting a case that can basically make my old hard drive into an external and then transfer to the new one using usb.

also where can i get sp2 from? I looked on the microsoft site but it was all just updates and stuff. Il look agn tho.

And thx, i really need the help.

windows update should have forced you to get SP2 over a year ago.
do you have windows update turned off ?

and how do you turn off encryption ?
unfortunately you need to know that.
its your adapter not mine
you cant run your pc without knowing anything about how to operate it.

and no you dont install windows on an old hard drive then use ghost to put everything back what the heck kind of sense does that make?

you have a bad system now, so lets ghost it and then put on a fresh XP and then put all the screwed up crap back...

and no you dont install windows on an old hard drive then use ghost to put everything back what the heck kind of sense does that make?

ok... i dont think u understood me.

I am getting a new hard drive.

I want to transfer everything to that, but obviously my windows files (on my old hard drive) are messed up.

So i planned on putting windows on my new hard drive, booted it from that and connected my old hard drive through usb. (i only have one ide slot.)

Then use norton ghost to transfer everything (xcept windows) from new to old.

I dont want to reinstall everything on my new hard drive, b/c that would take forever b/c of licsenes and stuff.

Plus i need to transfer all my music, movies and psp isos.

Its the hard drive that broken, its a maxtor 60 gb, that i got in 2001.

and i do know alot about computers, just not about operating systems, and stuff like that. I just thought that if you uninstalled windows and reinstalled it, it would swipe ur hard drive, the system recovery disks that is.

About the encryption... is says there is no wep or anything.

i got service pack 2 and i try to repair connection but it cant renew my ip address. Also is says acquiring network address under the little icon thingy in network connections, but it doesnt get past that.

I am going to try to connect it to lan right after i post this.

replace your router or whatever your using for DHCP

or update the firmware

But:
- I can connect wireless with other things (to the same router) ex. wii, ds
- I can connect lan and wireless to another comp (the one im using now) and obviously it works fine. (to the same router)

I got the latest firmware for the adapter. How would i install firmware to the router? B/c i dont have a network set up, i just connect to this comp using an ethernet and wireless to the other one (before it broke), b/c i dont need to share files (between comps)or anything.

If i get a new hard drive and a fresh version of windows, do you think my problem will be solved?

Use sp2 for sure. DONT use netgears soft use microsofts to connect to the net. Im a netgear fan. I ONLY use netgears soft if i have 2. Like for win 98. I spent almost 200 bucks for there newest router. Make sure u update the firmware. If u cant update it just reload the firmware the router came with. THENNNN the new one will update;) . If that dont work manually load the mac adress in. Sometimes the one netgear provides doesnt match the one on the box:up: . Look on the side of the box there will most likely be a different mac from the one provided. :yepp:

Well i downloaded the latest firmware for the adapter, but i still says the driver version is 1.5, which is what it was before i updated it. Now im sure its not the adapter
i tried to connect lan and i had the same problem. I have a westell versalink 327W, and it works with everything else thats wireless in my house, and even with the adapter when its on another computer. I used the adapter on another comp and it worked fine
and it worked on this comp until Halo froze.

we got the router from verizon like two yrs ago and we dont have the files b/c we refreshed the only hard drive it was on at the time.

I just dont understand how i could get firmware onto the router, from my computer, it only connects through an ethernet, and how could it do that, it confuses me.

I have alot of "book" smarts when it comes to internet connections, but almost no "street" smarts and when it comes to actually getting something to work... it doesnt.
