I don't want to spend $230 just so I can use more RAM and play Halo 2.
So...can I get by with Business? What is the best option?

imo, best bang for the buck is home premium 64bit $140 http://store.purplus.net/wivihopr64.html

I you have always used XP Home and were happy with the features then Vista Premium is for you. I love it and don't miss any of the extra features of the more expensive versions and I like the built in Media Center.

I want something with the smallest possible footprint. I use XP Pro with tons of stuff disabled.
I am looking at Business, but it's still a :banana::banana::banana: ton of money.

You most definitely don't need business. If you won't use the Media Player aspect go with the Business edition.
