this seems to be the best place for this,
I was just thinking would there be any point in cutting a fan hole in the motherboard tray behind the cpu/ NB and mounting either 120mm or 80mm fan there to cool the other side of the motherboard?
I would imagine this could cool nearly the whole of the motherboard from behind because of the narrow gap between the mobo and tray...
Like I said just a thought, anyone tried it? / would it be worth it?

the Coolermaster CM690 Case has a cutout and a fan mount on the back of the motherboard tray for this very purpose. I to am wondering if this helps at all.

my 80x80x15 fan is coming this Friday, I'm gonna mount in push and pull, low speeds, I'll post here with the results :D

Yeah this is what im thinking... planning on getting a MM horizon so it would be ideal in that case because there is so much room under the MB tray.

The results should clear this up Lucky

fan came early today
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/116274

as you can see airflow is very bad, but its 80mm and very thin.

mounting area, as you can see the TRUE backplate and motherboard is very close to the grill, about 2mm.
I did notice the grilling was warm to the touch.

fan blade is also very close to the grill

any difference?
well the noise is noticeable, even on 7V, most likely the lack of space there, very little airflow can be felt, I had to look for myself to make sure the fan was spinning.

temps, its knocked off about 2-3C from the CPU, but since I value quietness, I'm going to remove it.
I'm contemplating switching it around as an intake but my room is dusty, in a month or two, it'll be hell back there.

Ghost326267, I would expect a larger difference in temp drop with a bigger/better fan and used as intake.

most cases dont allow for something like this but i always thought that some kind of flat heatsink attached via thermal tape could help with temperatures, maybe not idle but load deffinately

actually isnt there a gigabyte board with a heatsink underneath?

this is bound to help to some degree. maybe we'll see another installment from thermalright which elaborate long heatpipes coming from under the motherboard with a little radiator

i wouldnt put it past them

Thanx all for the replys, haven't been on in a while.
Those fans look good for it. I dont want to try it now in the antec 900, but I think im getting a MM Horizon so that has plenty of room under the MB tray to mount a fan, thinking 120mm :)
Lucky thanx for that :) 2-3 degrees to some people is a lot lol, would consider using it as a intake though. It probably loud because it attached to so much of the metal and just vibrating through it.
Yeah Gigabyte do make motherboards with heatsinks underneath. It came on mine its a big slab of copper called 'crazy cool' if i remember right but to install most HSF or waterblocks which require a backplate you have to remove it. Yeah I can see thermalright doing that:up:

My old P35DQ6 had the "crazy cool" backplate mounted behind the cpu. It was a large copper plate that was "supposed" to cool the board more, but with the TRUE, it was removed anyway.
