I want to push an e6420 to 3.5ghz....

Need a cooler. There's a sale going on and I have these 3 options:

Thermalright U-120E Ultra-120 eXtreme $48.42
Thermalright Ultra -120A $40.99
Tuniq Tower 120 - $55.99 /B]
Scythe NINJA PLUS Rev.B 6Heat Pipes CPU Cooler $33.99
Scythe INFINITY 5Heat Pipes CPU Cooler $39.99

All prices in CAD. Apparently there's a $8 MIR promotion for all Scythe coolers too so make it $25.99 for the NINJA and $31.99 for the INFINITY. I was thinking of TR U-120E or the Scythe INFINITY. [B]I have a few 120x38 Panaflo M1A 120mm 61CFM/30dBA fans and a fan controller sitting here so I can definitely add some additional air cooling.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: PRICES UPDATED! TUNIQ AVAILABLE.

All things considered, I'd go with the Scythe INFINITY in a push-pull config... ;)

LoL @ spawne32

he's right tho. this is a 100% "no competition" on recommendiation.

i have the earlier 4 pipe version and it performs admirably vs the 6 pipe scythe. an extra 2 pipes is only pushing its capabilities further

I LIED. :(

ORIGINAL POST UPDATED!!

TUNIQ IS NOW AVAILABLE.....

ULTRA-120 EX vs TUNIQ 120.....
$48.42 vs $55.99.....

what to do, what to do......

If I mount 2 x Panaflo M1As onto the Ultra-120, will it kill the Tuniq 120?

tuniq is a waste of money, Ultra 120 extreme will still perform better and give more options with cooling fans, i cant wait for the day Tuniq goes EOL

what to do, what to do...Your choice...

To me, it's a matter of aesthetics and sandpaper, among other things!

Plus, Thermalright has brain-washed their client base into buying *new* coolers every six months. It's called planned obsolescence.

Tuniq did it right the first time...

Why don't you add the Enzotech Extreme-X to the list :)
I think it looks the best.

btw I had also a E6420, had it clocked @ 3.4ghz with 1.44 vcore, during hot summer, Small FFTs run with this cooler it was 47-48c. Before had a Stock cooler was struggelin @ 3.2ghz with 1.35vcore and was @ 58c load:X, ah for the sake of comparison i did also test @ 3.2ghz @1.35vcore on the TRUE, small FFTs load: 38-41c, all according coretemp. So comming from a stock cooler gave me 17-20c better temps:X deffo worth it:up:

well $62 is not much more than $55.99. You can find that much laying around under your couch in your car. :)

You already have the panaflo fans so go for the TRUE. The Infinity's Mounting is 100 times worse than the TRUE. The True just needs a little rubber in that mounting hole to fit nicely without doing the TWIST. The Infinity if knocked around can just dismount off the CPU. The Tuniq On push-pull config would look really fugly. Lapping the TRUE's base does help too.

thanks

consensus between most boards say TRUE so TRUE it is....it's cheaper too so that's good.....

now I just need to decide on the motherboard =\

I think he has Panaflo's, so that should do fine.I think he should dump the Panaflo's and buy YL fans, if he wants to be like everyone else... otherwise, they'll think he's a rebel, no? :ROTF:

^^^ My case which i recently swapped out of for my Stacker had 7x 80mm Panaflo M1a fans which ran 24/7 for roughly 7 years.

... now that is quality!

Speaking of Yate Loons, I had mine shipped to my workplace. FrozenCPU.com shipped them in a box that said "keep frozen, nugget shapped bread patties" or something. Of course, the guys at work put it in the freezer.

think you guys can help me on the mobo?

the deciding factor right now is whether I should stick with the Asus P5KC stock heatpipe chipset cooler or get a cheaper gigabyte DS3L + a TR HR-05 SLI/IFX......

At OP ... funny thing is, considering all the banter and chicken patties and what not :ROTF: ... *any* of your originally suggested coolers will work ... considering you get a CPU that's okay with 3.6ghz.

That said ...

Within the bunch, the Thermalright coolers will be the best regarding absolute best temps. Undisputed.

But if you like modding and what not ... and only if you want to spend as little as possible, the Infinity is a sure thing once you apply a proper high pressure mod and a good lap job.

I'm using a pressure mod'd Infinity with my 6400 and I run daily at 3.6ghz. No worries.

I do like the Thermalright's more, though ... I just didn't have the money to mail order and the Infinity was on sale local for 30 bucks or so.

Otherwise ... to reiterate ... *any* of your posted coolers will work ... with the only prerequisite being a decently overclockable CPU chip.

I've seen a modded Infinity that had a black case made from a school binder to force all of the air through. It had a good drop in temps, can't remember how much though, it was a long time ago.

Yeah ...

That's Enzos mod'd Infinity ... looked sick with the black sidewalls:

Yeah, it is very sick. Just shows what you can do with two fans and a binder :)
