I've got a fairly tarnished/oxidized Zalman CNPS9500. How would I clean it to make it looking new again?? I can't get my hands on acid or anything along those lines, I've only got household stuff. What could I use to clean it?

Maybe the power of Oxiclean could enlighten the situation.

vinegar + high protein flower in a bowl then add the hs (without the fan) pull it out, then rinse off in the sink after 5-10mins, then dry with a blow dryer on cool or no heat just high flow and then reassemble
notes
it dosnt matter what vinegar just use the cheep white industrial made one (its the cheapest) with a little bit of flower
use white flower whole grain wont make the vinegar stick to the hs
and make sure that u rinse it all off and dont let it dry on there or it will be hard to get off

If you can't find oxi-clean then some metal polish and a polishing cloth (anything lint-free should be OK) would do fine. Just make sure to wipe any residue or left over polish before mounting the heatsink.

thanks fellas, sounds like vinegar + high protein flour is the best option
a question, would just normal flour work or does it have to be high protein?

i think the high protein is there to get rid of the oxide faster

the vinegar gets rid of the oxidation the high protein is stickier, and if u have al purpose it should work but if u have the stuff for a bread making machine it works the best

cool info. :D
Will do this when my 9700LED gathers some dirt. :D
Btw, how strong should the vinegar solution be? How much flour should we mix with the vinegar?
And, does this work with the TR Ultra 120x as well or other Al Heatsinks for the matter? Thnx

i use 8v:1f then add flower until its like a thin past like elmers white school glue but not so much that it turn into something that resembles dough, and i use normal white vinegar in the gallon bottle its like $2 a bottle i wouldent advise using whine vinegar or stuff thats good for eating since u just want it for the oh+ base ion
it also works for aluminum silver nickel and plat including jewelry, but not painted materials since it will eat the paint, and make sure that u get it all off or it will eat the metal after a while

Hmm...I don't know how it's called in other countries, but here we have a spray with oil, which is called WD 40. It is used to remove rust, oxide and all sorts of dirt from metals. Just spray it, wait for ~15 minutes and then wipe with a cloth.

monstru, I've got some WD-40 here, but its a bit hard wiping off the oxidation on the copper fins of a Zalman 9500. any tips?

Most are fast and easy, but follow instructions and maintain caution with some.
Wenol All Metal Polish, Bar Keeper’s Friend, Wright’s Copper Cream and Brasso are just a few. Our current favorite is Brasso Multi-Purpose Metal Polish which produces a wonderful polished finish.
Shake well
Apply to a soft dry cloth
Rub lightly all over the copper to loosen dirt
Allow to dry for a few minutes
Polish with a soft dry cloth.
Home Made Solutions
There are some very easy ways to clean copper by just raiding your fridge or pantry! Some of these are great on flat pieces, like the bottom of copper pots.
Ketchup. Smear ketchup all over the area, Leave for 5-10 minutes and rinse clean!
Lemon halves & salt. Dip half a lemon into salt and rub across the copper. Rinse & dry.
Lemon & salt paste. Make a paste of lemon juice and salt (or baking soda), rub into the copper with a cloth, rinse with water and dry
Solution to make & keep. This is one you can make up and store in a glass jar with a secure lid for future use with great results.
Mix ½ cup each of flour, salt and powdered detergent
Add ¾ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup of lemon juice, ½ cup warm water
Mix well and pour into the glass jar, label and seal.
To use, add a small amount onto a cloth and rub it into Copper. Use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas.
Rinse with water and rub dry with a clean cloth.
Follow these simple steps, and you'll be able to keep your copper as warm and polished as the day you bought it for many years!

Won't do anything for performance in case anyone is wondering. Vinegar works, I've done it in the past on copper heatsinks just for looks. It will look really fresh, but it will fade rather quickly after.

I boiled a HS in vinegar once. It created an acidic death cloud in the kitchen. That was neat :) It barely worked, too. Flour must be the magic key.

It was an entirely oxidized copper Zalman CNPS-7000. A friend of mine's parents live in a house that has like a toxic sulfur atmosphere heh. Water's not even drinkable. Everything that can oxidize does so like crazy. So we were trying to get the crap off of it. Vinegar was working, but not very fast. I'd used vinegar on another copper cooler before, with good results, but it wasn't encrusted with black crap like this Zalman. So, I gave some heat a shot figuring that maybe a little bubble action + heat might help!
As said above, flour + vinegar is one way to go. I didn't know of the flour part. I also like the idea of spraying ketchup everywhere tho!

I guess you havent had many visits in the liquid cooling section about how vinegar + copper = bad.
Look for the countless threads that are titled "Washed my dtek fuzion out with vinegar like a friend said, and now its green!"

All you know is ... not much  But you sure stick your uninformed opinion in. A simple google query yields this page - http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem03/chem03505.htm - which explains what actually happens. From that, you can conclude that vinegar can be used to clean copper, as long as it is washed off quickly.

thats what the flower method dose it isolates the copper from the air so when u rinse it off u get rid of the vinegar with n a spit second of exposeing it and the vinegar to air
