View Full Version : Vista back to XP! To Downgrade or Not, That is the Question?
Microsoft is giving a fraction of its customers the option to
downgrade to XP at no charge or penalty.
This group consists of the Business and Ultimate users, who may or may not
have as many problems as these versions require high-end hardware
to run.
It appears the fraction they have eliminated are the Home Premium
and Home Basic users. (This faction seems to be the most vocal
and resistent to Vista after giving it a fair shake).
Considering the numerous problems many are having with Vista
overall, do you think they should give all their customers that
option without penality or charge? Why or why not?
This is a little old but it explains the issue very well!

almost same question:
Ok, here's the deal, CirCty & BstBy have a few laptops that are either Turion or Celeron with 1 GB memory.
1GB is not OK with VISTA.
So, can you purchase a Vista laptop (Turion or Celeron with 1GB only) and partition its HD to install XP into it? (which should run on 1GB just fine)
How about driver issues specially with Network cards (read its a common problem with HP/Compaq Vista Laptop turned into XP)?
Can I use my older XP Home OS(previously installed in an Acer) to installed to partitioned HD of a newer Acer (currently running Vista)?

One gig is just fine. It's the preinstalled crap that comes on them. I have wiped a sempron and cd and they do just fine. I have found it's all the preinstalled stuff that was installed on them. The core duo system was slower than dirt, why because it had an extra 30 gigs of preinstalled stuff most of which took up cpu cycles and ram. I find the the consumer toshiba models that I have worked with are the worst. Want a 2 gigahurtz c2d and 2 gigs of ram with a 5400rpm hard drive seem like your back on xp with 256 megs of ram, buy a toshiba.

i've tried XP 64 in the trial version and i found it very snappy on a single installed drive...i felt that it compared to operating a 32 bit XP in a raid configuration.
NOW...vista 64, at least experienced through RC2, was unimpressive!...i am using an OEM 32 bit vista version which i find is very quick in "Raid"!

I have wasted more then enough money of operating systems in the last year. XP 32 SP3 is very quick, but us starting to look out dated and doesnt support DX10. I recommend Vista Ultimate x64 (not rc2); runs as quick as XP, yet supports DX10, 4Gb ram ect..

if you are vista32 upgrade to 64bit
if you are 64bit there is no reason to downgrade
