Has anyone any experience with trying to install Thermalright's 120 Ultra Extreme at a 90 degree angle? I have a new mountain mods cube with the motherboard facing to the right side of the case. So to keep with airflow I need to install it turned.
Thoughts?

I could take some later, I assume you meant the case. Lost the pics of the build when my raptor crashed 2 weeks ago.
Here is a review of the same case

I wanted to see the board mounted on a angle.

if you have AMD, you need to use the S-clip if you want to rotate by 90 degrees, LGa775 can rotate 90 degrees no problem.

would there be any way to rotate an ultima 90? would an S-clip for a 120 work with the 90 and could that be bought seperatly?

If you do try it, be careful and check thoroughly to make sure the s-clip is not making contact with the heatpipes while fitting or after fitment. :)
A friend's SI-128 has a deep gash on one of the pipes and his TRU120 is useless now as one heatpipe has been slashed open accidentally by the s-clip.
Maybe he tried rotating the hsf into position after fitting the clip. :shakes:
But with 6 pipes on the ultima and the TRUE120, it will be really really close close- if it fits in the first place. :(

Thanks, its a 775. This QX6700 seems too hot for my 120.2 to keep cool.

Umm a 120.2 rad dedicated to the CPU (with a good block and pump of course) should get better temps than air.

You would think so:
RD-30
DTEK Fuzion
Swiftec MCRES
120.2
1st core crunches @ 73c-75c I might try re-attaching but as soon as I go over stock FSB the temp flies up.

B3 stepping QX6700? have you lapped the IHS or Fuzion?

Anyone with a picture of using the s-clip withthe 120 to achieve 90 degree? I would love to uncover my number 1 DIMM slot that the 120 overhangs.

No, never lapped anything. And yes B3. It is running cooler now at lower FSB and 13 multi, not cool enough but still - Love this unlocked multi.

The S-clip does not work for Ultra-120 extreme...

i'd recommend improving surface contact and using a good paste
i lost 11 degrees just by lapping the heatink and IHS with AS5. moved to a 6piped TRUE and lost another 6 degrees with MX2. i read such results on here and other places but until you see it yourself its something you can only take other peoples word for

I'd lap the chip first..If you don't want to there are guys that will do it for you.
Couple hours work tops.
results will vary depending on the chip.
You might see 1-2C decrease or maybe even 8-10C if the IHS is very concave.
In your shoes I'd pull the chip, get a straight edge, hold up to the light and see if you can see light in the center of the chip.
Do that from all 4 sides.. If no light I'd just reseat with good TIM and hope it was just a bad seating job..

There are at least half a dozen reports out there of the 120x arriving with a ridge the size of the rocky mountains running across the base in line with the heatpipes. You might check your's with a razor for flatness. Mine had a good 2mm ridge and absolutely required lapping. The reward was 10C improvement while loaded.

Yes, try to lap. sometimes these things are ways off the mark.

and if none of these help, pop the retaining lip around the socket. Took about 13c off my b3 quad underwater.
