Quick spec first.

P4 2.4B @ 150 FSB (2700) stock retail Heatsink.
Abit IT7 MAX
512MB Corsair XMS PC3500 (CPU/Mem ratio at 4:3 = Memory at 200MHz)
2 x 40GB Maxtor D740X RAID 0 (C: here)
1 x WD800JB (All drives on seperate channels)
Antec 1080AMG, 430W True with 2 front intakes (one over the drives), 1 side intake and 2 x exhausts on rear.

When I originally set this up, I tried to take it to 2.9GHz, but the BIOS kept throwing up temp warnings. It's user wants a stable, good system, so getting the absolute max isn't imperitive. I settled for making sure the full load temps didn't come above 50C and after many tests, 150 FSB was the sweet spot.

In the last few weeks there have been 3 occasions where the BIOS throws up temp alerts. Two were during defrags of the 80GB drive, so I decided to set the BIOS warning to 55C.

The third happened lately and here's a quick run down of the temps and environment (using Winbond), which I re-created using a 212 page pdf and copyed and pasted it to a 434 page word file:

Action CPUFAN ChassisFAN Casetemp CPUtemp
idle 2557rpm 1534rpm 30C 41C
openpdf " " " 41/42C
select & copy " " " 45C-->42C
open word " " " 42.5C/42C
paste " " " 43.5C-->42C
wait " 1592rpm " rising 42C-56C
wait 10mins 2637rpm 1623rpm " tops out at 56.5C
del word " " " dropping
del pdf 2557rpm 1534rpm " 43.5C

Memory should run at 216MHz, so it should be fine....yes?
Motherboard should be fine?
What is causing Word to heat the CPU up while (in theory) the CPU is idling?

It wasn't idling. Something in the background was going on loading the CPU.

So what was possiblt doing it?

Going from idle before the task to the tasks listed above, to closing them. Why would word or adobe throw the CPU temps up like that?

Perform the test again.

While you do that, open the Task Manager (Ctl+Alt+Del), look under the Processes Tab, and observe which Processes are running and also note which Process is using the CPU.

You can also view the Performance Tab under Task Manager and watch the CPU Usage rise and fall and see if it correlates to your temp changes. I'm sure it will.
