Hey all,
In my line of business I often come across Pc's with Windows licenses/oem stickers etc attached which I then pass on.
Am i right in saying that laptops/servers have a different kind of license attached (it looks different anyway), and when that equipment is sold on so is the licence?
However, there is a more common sticker that is often attached to desktops. Am i right in saying these licenses cannot be transfered by purchasing the equipment (i.e the PC).
Would appreciate any help as I often get confused.
Thanks

My guess is that your seeing OEM and retail lisences..
effectively the same but some restrictions.

Thats right, it those little stickers you see attached on the side of cases. I am never able to get any paperwork. Desktop one's are different compared to server and laptops though. Please post any info you have on either. I am particularly interested to know if the previous user can transfer a license (e.g xp pro) legally to another machine. If so, what would happed if I reinstall the OS on that PC and insert the attached serial?
I think i am right in saying servers are different, i.e if you purchase one with a windows2003 sticker attached then the 'ownership' is passed on with the hardware?
edit:
Found a pic, the top one is what I mostly see on Desktops with the bottom one regularly found on laptops/servers (what is the differnce between the 2? :

owner ship is passed with hardware, if its oem or retail but not for oem for system builders
but arnt most servers/workstations licensed under a site license that limits the number of accounts and unique users and not the number of machines
