hi. i,m curious about what is the current best hard drive. i have heard their are multiple hard drives that have come out recently that out perform the wd raptors.
segate was saying their new tb drive was going to be a top performer and now that it is out how does it spec out?
i've got a decent set up now but im running low on hd space. currently i have 2 150gb raptors hds in raid 0, a 500gb segate, and a 250gb wd.
so if the tb segate out performs and is cheaper per gb i would be up for getting one.
i'm not worried about drive failure and losing 1tb of data as i back up the things i can't do without (as all should).
so, any news on the top performers?

i think that the top single drive is the fujitsu 15k rmp sas

the fujitsu sas drives sometimes work in sata controllers depending on teh controller, and are priced similar to raptors

u can also pickup used sas controllers for like $100

but if ur not usieng a pci-x or pci-e4x card u wont get anything noticeable better than a 7200rpm 2.5inch drive but most drives are within 10% at 7200 oe 10k for 3.5 inch drives so its not that big of a difference until u get into raid

is there any way to tell what kind of sata controllers would work on sas drives.
15k is way better than a raptor.

how loud are the drives? my raided raptors and the loudest part of my computer. the segate 500gb is noisy also.
what about in the 200gb and up range?
maybe i should just get a 3rd raptor.

i have 2 samsung 500gb and they are silent the 5 fans in my comp are louder than the drives (4 yate loon 88, and 1 tt smart fan 2 all in 120mm)

sas controllers work on sata because its newer

ya, but wouldn't controlling a drive with a card instead of an onboard interface increase the latencies because its not integrated as tightly with the board?

sas isn't intergrated on the normal mobo's, and it would proberly be slower because it costs your cpu while with cards it doesn't

What about SSDs???

There still a bit too expensive for my liking....

I also heard the 1st generation of ssd's having blazing fast read time's but below par write time's... (this is for the samsung ssd)

If that's true then you could use the SSD for all your programs (read) and a 500Gb drive for saving files...
