Windows XP SP3 build 3205 is the first official & authorized release of the next Windows XP service pack; and has been made available to testers as a part of the Windows Server 2008/Windows Vista SP1 beta program. NeoSmart Technologies has the run-down on the included 1,073 patches/hotfixes including security updates. Contrary to popular belief, Windows XP SP3 does ship with new features/components, most of which have been backported from Windows Vista. Some included features: 'New Windows Product Activation model: no need to enter product key during setup. Network Access Protection modules and policies have been brought to XP after being one of the more-well-received features in Windows Vista. New Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module - the Windows XP SP3 kernel now includes an entire module that provides easy access to multiple cryptographic algorithms and is available for use in kernel-mode drivers and services. New "Black Hole Router" detection - Windows XP SP3 can detect and protect against rogue routers that are discarding data.

Is Server 2008 really THAT interesting though, won't it be another Vista resource hog? At least comparing minimum requirements I don't see any difference here. :)

I would be more interested in a OS that is the exact opposite approach than Vista, ie XSOS 3.0. :D

ive got server 2003 and i like it. if you dont mind running a server o/s as a main o/s is pretty good and i think it runs alot better than xp ever has.

as for the sp3, wonder what its going to fix this go around, maybe it will make it were us XP users can use directx 10 but i doubt it.

If they could just make it so we could install raid drivers without having to have a damn 1.44MB floppy around it would all be worth it... (yes i know you can slip stream them, but thats way to much of a pita)

alfaunits

Slipstreaming drivers is not a PITA - it lets you nlite your installation, too, that's good ;)
Vista allows for drivers to be on a USB.

The main thing I like about Vista is how well 64 bit Vista is supported, making the use of 4GB+ of RAM possible :D

Is that whats responsible for resetting my sharing/firewall settings every time i connect to a different network? If so that is a really annoying "feature".

I am 100% sure the CD key is the same one I used on the installation (because I used it on this one too and its genuine)

Anyone else have their product key invalid?

After you integrate SP3, replace the PIDGEN.DLL file from your original XP disc, also delete the pidgen.inf or something like that, you'll get an error on the installation when it starts to copying files regarding the missing file, but just ignore it.

sp2 is more than stable enough, dont even see the need for this, if u have all the new hotfixes anyway. Guess its cool though, whatever i wont be installing beta software from micro$. will wait for final, just like with the new vista sp1 build floating around. beside's that one has a timer that nukes your install

that number will expire, but when i did the vista beta they gave me vista home premium. so maybe they will let you get 2008 final.

I would be more interested in a OS that is the exact opposite approach than Vista, ie XSOS 3.0. :D

actually XSOS V3.0 is going to be promoting the use of Vista x64 minus some legacy features we believe were a mistake to include.
It is time for the world to move past 32bit and 8 Registers and come into the light of 64bit and 16 General Purpose registers.

UAC for teh win. lol They said they were porting some features back? Geez. Let me guess. UAC, Bloat, bloat and more bloat. Bugs that fix other bugs (aka hotfixes). This is starting to look more and more like NT4 server back in the day. Altho on the other hand if NT4 had more than DX3 support and USB support added in (not bsquare but the real deal) It would be the best OS out there in terms of performance. Small, fast...maybe not so functional but 3rd party tools often address that problem....then again screw it.

Gah Windows is a mess right now. Altho they do have some interesting things coming down the pipeline. They do have plans for a "mini" windows (betting the idea was ripped off from XSOS, nlite and such.) Basically creating a smaller customized version of windows, people can build on. This is not WinPE, This is something completely new.

I heard this via a contact I know at MS. It was intresting to hear about. Bottom line is that they have started to listen to reason and are realizing their OS is a bloated mess. Linux and FreeBSD and Mac OSx with their modular kernels has really made it harder for MS to compete in emerging markets.

For me the problem isn't that it's buggy, it's too slow for my liking. I'm not looking forward to Server 2008, it's too much Vista like, resource excessive and massive, the opposite of Win 2k3.

That's dissappointing to know, I was really looking forward to SP3. Ah well. Thanks for giving us the heads up.

As for Vista, I could've sworn there were tons of articles and outcries about it because it seemed like the whole OS was like one big piece of spyware. Everyone was crying fowl!

I've benched apps that are CPU/system performance depending and there it looses to XP just like Vista, but in PC games the difference is quite minimal. Still it didn't impress me at all, I prefer XP more but yea since it has DX10 support I'd rather use it than Vista at least. Will give it another go later on with newer builds and "lite" versions appear that installs as little as possible and once I've upgraded to DX10 GPU. It's nothing like Win Server 2k3 though and nothing spectacular.

Yes....Basically.

But DX10 will be obsolete when ever Microsoft releases DirectX 11 since it allows direct hardware interaction. But DX11 was cut from recent notes of Windows 7 so I don't know when we will see it.
