View Full Version : poor 9800 pro? (ATI)
just got my 9800 pro (ati one) that my parents brought back from frys in america. Thought it would be complete crap before i even opened the box, due to a nice sticker on the front which reads
"This product carries the same manufacturers warranty as a new product. This product may be in an open box, may have been used and returned by a customer or may have been repaired by an authorized service provider. Upon its return this product was checked by frys and carries the same manufacturers warranty as a new product."
In other words my oh so clever parents have bought a second hand 9800 pro which was obviously returned almost certainly due to it being a complete pile of §§§§ overclocker.
Well 10 mins into testing and I've already been proven correct as the highest settings i can use without getting any artifacts in nature on 3dm2003 are 384/351  . Stock cooling, but im sure these arent very good speeds at all. MY score with those settings is 6053, i get 19000 in 3dmark 2001 with those settings..
I cant even blame the psu since its a PCP&C 510w.
anyone still wanna question whether im cursed or not?

Damn dude that sucks. Why don't you do a bad flash and RMA it? ;)
because itll probably cost me more to send it back to america and get a replacement than it would to buy a new one and sell this, and im not going to do that either since ill just end up with another crap one like i always do.
Where in the us did it come from? Im headed 2 rochester next week although theyre aint no frys afaik, best buy or compusa

what are normal REASONABLE overclocks for a 9800 pro using stock cooling? just so i know how much im losing here.

What would scare me actually would be if the 9800 pro is not running with stock thermal paste... (or goop... what does it use?) If something fails and you need to RMA, ATI might reject it even if you did nothing to it. Where do you live? I drop by fry's burbank quite often (no hollywood... its a little north of hollywood :P) and could try to help you out with this... (how many days you got for return?)

Rule #1 for shopping at Fry's, don't buy the returned stuff! If you need gear for a non-oc rig though, it's a great deal. Last time I was there I saw a R9800 Pro for 357.00. Since Fry's accepts returns very easily, a lot of people try out gear and return it. Hell, you can buy some stuff, go home and post a 24K score and return the stuff the next day without spending one thin dime.

Mine does 440/360 with stock cooling. I would pull off the stock HSF and see if it is making good contact. I'll bet that it isn't.

My Crucial Radeon 9800 Pro only does 456/369. First ATi Radeon 9800 Pro did 450/380 (dead now) and my 2nd card does 495/395. All stock cooled...
DoGMaN congrat's on your little bundle of joy btw! :D

Thanks Colin!! ;)
ill take a look at the stock heatsink and stick some ceramique under it. my memory scores dont seem to be a huge amount below everyone elses and its VERY hot here today my, "system" temp gets to 45c now.
the core is WAY WAY WAAAAAAY below everyone elses though, which is obviously why this thing was returned.
im not going through the hassle of sending it back to america for the sake of a 60mhz higher core. i might stick the thing on ebay and buy a new one here, or i could wait for the r420 and then dump this one (the original plan was to buy this and keep it for a good 12-24 months like the GF3 its replacing). dont know what im gonna do yet, if im lucky i can fix it by re-doing the hsf.
also gained very little by having a 57cfm delta and a 45cfm papst both blowing accross the card, gained nothing on the core, managed 357 on the memory (artifacts at 364, didnt try in between but may have done 360).
I have now stuck the thing on ebay for £260 so hopefully thatll sell soon.
I've already ordered a connect3d 9800 pro from a UK store for £280 so hopefully ill get a half decent one and its only cost me £40. Lets face it, it REALLY REALLY cant be worse than this one which does a whopping 9mhz core overclock and 11mhz mem overclock before artifacts on both.
at a guess im looking at anything between 440 and 490 core clocks on average with stock cooling right?

9800 sold, new 9800 just shipped
i read on another forum theres a serious problem of "stuttering" when AA and/or AF are enabled on these radeons. Does this happen in rtcw? how easy is it to spot this stuttering? is it like a big half second stutter or are they smaller?
im trying to work out if i am getting these in rtcw because it does seem to stutter a tiny bit usually in the middle of a fight so i cant really tell if the card is stuttering or whether its just the game itself. It isnt obvious enough for me to tell for sure if its really stuttering or not as it doesnt exactly happen all the time, but its often enough to be very irritating IF thats whats happening.
the only other games i can test it on are vice city, driver and quake3.

Come on ewok don't give up RMA that sucka !!
BTW 420/360 stock cooling.
Also try ripping off the hsf on it and making sue it has good contact and put some as3 on there. I have brough home 2 cards and both reach ed about the same speeds.

well its arrived. as if im not cursed enuff, i have yet ANOTHER card which has already been opened.
the connect3d box itself was not shrinkwrapped and the static bag the card was in had clearly been opened because the sticker had been peeled up, AND the power cable was actually plugged into the card inside the static bag instead of being inside the box.
So my first thoughs once again are, ive got a card that someone has tested in the shop, it wont overclock so they have sent it back.
So I fire it up, set the core to a nice easy test at 420 and mem at 360. get to test3 in 3dm2003 and ive got artifacts. get to nature and the water looks more like snow than water.
so the card wont do anything near a core of 420. There were no memory artifacts at 360 however.

omg..
you are 1 unlucky dude. who did u get the card from?
theoverclockingstore.co.uk
and thats exactly where its going back to.
this core will only do 398 artifacts free. its going back because it was 'previously used' and I didnt not pay for a 'pre-tested' video card.
To back me up, MrLavender also got one from the same shop and I expect he will tell me that his box was shrinkwrapped, unopened and that the power cable does not come attached to the card already. In which case they dont have a leg to stand on and I WILL get a *NEW* replacement. Just waiting for a reply to his pm to confirm this before I email them and demand a replacement.
