View Full Version : New to TEC cooling. Need a bit of advice.

Well, I'm already going phase chnage on the CPU, and watercooling all the motherboard bits. I've decided I want to go TEC on my GPU.

I plan on getting either a 800GTX or more possibly a 9800 series card once they launch.

I know that the 8800GTX can draw at a maximum 150 watts, but most graphics cards never reach their maximum power rating. So the TEC I had in mind was something along the lines of this:

and possibly a 150 watt module also for the motherboard. Would these be acceptable? I used to know all the equations for Imax and Qmax stuff as well as delta, but I'm too tired to look them up right now. The motherboard TEC module I'm not 100% on yet, but a definite yes for the GPU. For the GPU, I'm not looking for some "ZMFG MY 1337 SUB ZERO TEMPZ!", solution, but surely something better than straight air or water can deliver, maybe close to freezing or along those lines.

I plan on getting the 320 watt swiftech supply which supplies 12V @ 25A.

What would you guys do?

hehehe um IMO you are doing the "ZMFG MY 1337 SUB ZERO TEMPZ!"!!!!

if your putting the cpu under phase then I would just leave the cpu under water only because it is just a big head ace to do tec on a GPU!

if your board is putting out (or can put out) 150w of heat and your sure you want to do tec on it I would say get the 170w tec or the 226w tec. the psu your planning to get of it is great! if you watch ebay you can get that same psu cheaper.

Yes well, the issue at hand is that the 172 watt peltier, has a Vmax of 15V (or was it 19V :confused:) This means that operated at 12V, it will only be able to remove 118 watts of heat which im guessing on the 9 series, will be average power draw. I was thinking of picking up the 24V 172 watt TEC dangerden sells and buying the 320 watt meanwell 24V aux supply. Then using some resistors to rig up mt three DDC pumps and the rad fans for safety, since I've seen the damage a TEC can cause without sufficient cooling. Then just pick up the relay kit since swiftech sells them seperately and rig it up to the meanwell.

15 volt [rated] TEC running @ 12 volts [actual] is ideal. As running your Peltier Module at 80% of it's total power rating is most efficient.

You never want to run your TEC at 100% power draw for any extended period of time for the sake of your power bill but more importantly from an overclockers standpoint, you will find the cooling capicity to power draw curve seems to drop significantly.

Find a more powerful Peltier and then clock down the power to 80% or so.

For really cheap dedicated power supplies, all new, check out TRC electronics. Just google them. They have ton of meanwells and others at every voltage rating needed
