I just got a new laptop and would like to connect it to my wired home network, BUT my router is upstairs and I want to be able to use my laptop downstairs...what kind of an adapter can I use? I don't want to upgrade to a wireless network YET and I DON'T want to route a cable through my house.

Your only option is to use power ethernet adapters that use the electric wiring in your house to transfer the signal.
I'm not sure how reliable they are or how they work exactly.

From what I've heard...they suck ASS big time. :( Might as well prepare to drill some holes.

What's stopping you from using a wireless router?

Simple...performance. To get performance even close to my wired network...I need ALOT of money-adapters for both my computers and the wireless router.

True, you would need "N" gear.
Sounds like you're running some CAT5 then.

I have the 200mb wired homeplugs and have purchased close to 40/50 for customers - I can recommend them they are true plug and play

easiest way i know of is to get a wireless router connect it to your primary router and set the wireless router to only accept traffic from your laptop and the primary router. And your won't have to wire the house for the laptop or move the existing router.
