It seems all parts are available in Canada now.
Here is a setup I've configured.
2x AMD Opteron 2344 HE Barcelona 2MB 55W 65NM (Quad core ver)
Thunder n3600M (S2932) ( http://www.tyan.com/product_board_detail.aspx?pid=453 )
4 x Kingston 512MB ECC PC6400 DDR2 800MH ( http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2231923&CatId=2341 )
Total comes to around 1300 CAD which is not that bad.

The only stuff I ordered for now is the Barcelona chips.
where did you get the barcelona's from? I find that odd that canada would get them before newegg or any other major us vendor

He says he has only ordered them, not received. www.ncix.com has them listed for pre-order. www.ncixus.com is the US site.

Yes, I only ordered them. Rest of parts are easy to obtain, but I have no idea when the CPU will come, so I am not ordering rest of the parts until the CPU arrives.
I think you are being over loaded with hardware and should share with the other members. I dont like your rigs :p:

ya to get any better you need to shell out a good $500 for each cpu to only get a 300mhz bump per cpu. so you made the right choice. and it's still 8 cores and will out perform and normal intel quad system.

If and when you get everything running, please run some WCG on it too.

Sorry about no update.
I have not forgotten about this rig. I will start collecting the parts in early Nov and hopefully assemble it and get it running by mid Nov.
LV2300 (TDP : 15watt) cruncher is also planned in either Nov or Dec.

Thats what I want to get is two of the low wattage Barcelona's in SM Board when they release boards that are worth using with those processors:rolleyes:
For now I am just on lowly PC:D

A pair of CPU have been ordered from NCIX. They gave me a 2-week ETA.
Meanwhile, I am debating which mobo to go with.
I have two choices.
1 ) http://www.tyan.com/product_board_detail.aspx?pid=223
Pro : Cheaper, much cheaper, ATX format.
Con : I have to use socket F heatsink, and they have no quiet heatsinks since they are designed for server environment. And I think I might have an air flow issue considering how awkwardly CPU sockets are lined up.
2) http://www.tyan.com/product_board_detail.aspx?pid=541
Pro : I can use AM2 heatsinks as long as they use the cpu socket retention.
Con : I see few chipsets there. It will use more powers. It's about 100 dollars more expansive than the #1.

Got links to 'em ?
By the way, why is it so hard to get a hold of Barcelona anyway ?

as to availibility, I am not sure..I have my thoughts but just not sure..

Honestly, I can't suggest one over the other.
I like SM boards because they work from day one as designed and they last.
The absolute best machine I ever had as a "daily driver" was my DX3600 machine. Never failed me, took power outages without having issues and just plain did what I wanted day in and day out while all the time crunching at 100% 24/7..

The second board I linked is 1U board. I suppose it might be fun to make a 8 core 1U rig, but it will cost more and I have that L2300 rig to build also ...
The only reason I have against SM board is my RMA trouble with them back in old days with Opteron 240 series.
Tyan boards haven't failed on me yet.

understood..maybe put this one on the back burner for awhile and concentrate on the L2300..there may be better boards out for the Barcs in 2-3 months..

I googled for Tyan and Barcelona. I haven't found anything troublesome between those two. Tyan has a relatively cheap board for Barcelona at the moment. I might just take that one and wait for a more matured board in the future.

All parts have been decided.
I will order motherboard ( Thunder h1000E, 260CAD ) & ECC DDR2 RAM (4gb, 100 CAD each) on Monday.
4gb ought to be enough for 8 cores ?
CPU's already ordered. Rough ETA on CPU is Nov 14th.

2GB would be fine aswell. I usually dont see much over 300-500MB used.

My dual woodcrest is using around 1.5gb of ram with 4 cores total.
8 cores with 2gb..., I am negative that it will work out well.
Meanwhile, since AMD 2344HE cpu does not come with a heatsink, I have to find an aftermarket heatsink.
CL-p0314 will do the job. (Already ordered)

Sure its not due to something else?
None of my 20 dual clovers use more.

I just looked at one of my Clover rigs.
WCG usage was:
80,172
106,628
106,624
106,600
106,616
106,552
106,556
86,080
For a total of 805,828.
What is an OS's overhead? Wouldn't you want more RAM for some "headroom", above and beyond the needs of the OS and WCG?. I believe ( but am not sure, to tell the truth ) that WCG works better if it doesn't have to go to the pagefile as much.
And that is just the OS and WCG. If you do much else with the rig wouldn't you want the "comfortability" of 4 GB?
I don't know. I knowI use 4 gigs. I just wanted to make sure I had enough for the rigs to run smooth.
I remember the days of the monster Cancer WU's ( BTW, WCG will be starting a second Cancer project shortly ). Some of those WUs could use over 300 MBs of RAM. I'm pretty sure that they will have coded the new ones more efficiently, but how much more.
For me, I think along the lines of 1 GB for a DC, 2 for a quad, and 4 for an 8 core.
That's just me, your mileage and usage patterns may vary.

All parts ordered.
Now, I have to play the waiting game.
I've also ordered RM12500 ( http://www.chenbro.com/corporatesite/products_detail.php?serno=45 )
It's a 1U chassis. Tyan motherboard I ordered is supported by it.
It's going to be fun balancing heat and noise.
8 cores in 1U, yet another extreme rig.

Today, NCIX canceled my Opteron 2344 HE order because they could not locate any "possible" source for stock.
Grrr, it's been a while since AMD released Barcelona, why is is so hard to get?
It looks like I won't be able to build this rig in Nov... or ever.

8 cores in a 1u thats sweet. one small and fast rig there!!!:D to bad about ncix though they are normally pretty good with orders. it would seem strange because barc has been out for a while now. unless dave is hogging them all in a desperate atempt to take down DDT in a massive 100 000 000 point jump:p: well that would be nice but i doubt it:D

Those heatsinks, however, won't be used in this build. It's for my next Opteron build in Dec hopefully.
Anyway, NCIX took my Opty 2344HE order again. However, this time, they did not charge me full but 10% deposit instead as I demanded. They told me they really don't have any idea when they will be able to ship and agreed to charge me 10% deposit instead.
