View Full Version : Radeon 9600 problems

First off, I managed 412fps in quake3 with my GF3. Plug this radeon into the same pc, cat 3.4, quake3 gives me 320fps.

Yet my 3dmark score was 1100 with the GF3 and is now 2500 with the Radeon 9600.

so how the hell is quake3 100fps slower than the GF3 was?

Also I have a major refresh rate problem in windows. It refuses to go to anything above 75hz even though my monitor can do 120. I can set it to anything up to 120 but the monitor is still running at 75hz.

finally whats the best overclocking tool for radeons? I want something I can run, set the clock, then get rid of, I dont want any memory resident crap.

I am also still getting framerate drops in rtcw at certain points exactly like I was with the GF3, something explodes infront of me and the fps drops to as low as 50 for a second, yet I have pretty much everything turned off, no AA or anything like that, and its only running in 1024. I know for a fact it isnt memory or cpu related since I have 3200mb unbuffered in sandra and im on a P4 at 3800mhz.

This be my first non nvidia card so i dont know if all this crap is normal.

i find rage3d tweaker the best so far for radeons..using it with my hercules 9800 pro...works quite good..:D

well apparently the q3 scores were so low due to memory bandwidth. upped the mem to 250 and im now getting 390. still short of the 412 i got with an old old GF3.

250 mem wasnt stable, down to 238 now which i think is stable. q3 fps at 355/238 is 375 which is still 40 short of what my 2 year old GF3 could do, now thats really pathetic.

still testing how high the core will go but its mem speed obviously crippling this thing and it artifacts above 238.

still cant work out why the HELL it wont go above 75hz in windows even though it KNOWS the monitor can do it and lets me set it to anything up to 120hz with no effect, hz stays on 75.

*edit*
quite impressed with the core at the moment, up to 430mhz stable with the stock PASSIVE cooling (one small heatsink) and no artifacts in 3dm2003, but with mem at stock 200. Only problem is its gaining me virtually NOTHING because this thing is SO starved of memory bandwidth. Q3 320fps at stock 325 core and mem. Q3 325fps at 400 core and stock mem. Q3 390fps at stock core and 250mem. Same effect is being seen in 3dmark 2003 as well. crashed 3dm at 336 core, about time, rage3d tweak only goes up to 336.

best i can get the memory is 236, 238 gets artifacts on mother nature. This card is SO memory limited, it cant match the 3dmark 2001 score of my 2 year old GF3 of 11350, this 9600 only managed 11033 at my highest stable clocks.....pathetic.

the g3 was a good card, the 9600 might be slower in some games... just like my g4mx would give me ~30fps in splinter cell and my 8500 gave me about 20... in 2k1 the 850 would beat the g4mx by 100points, but in most games the g4mx is faster than the 8500...

thats normal, diferent gpu=diferent performence... g4 gpus still beat geforce fx 5900 and radeon 9800 cards in some benches!

Thought you were getting a 9800 Pro Ewok?

For refresh rates get RefreshForce from here (http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/). You only have to run it once, then you can delete it if you want. The ATI drivers seem to be buggered in this department.

If you don't like memory resident stuff you won't like Rage3d Tweaker, I know I didn't. You can use RivaTuner to overclock (needs to run on startup but not memory resident). Or try RadLinker (http://www28.brinkster.com/chrisww1942/), that lets you have game-specific settings and is not memory resident.

DONT get refreshlock dunnop if this is anpther tool, but i got it and it screwed my windows! it seemed to work first, but i got really strong headaches and checked the refreshrate and it was skipping from 60 to 90hz, when i uninstalled it and rebooted windows didnt load...

RefreshLock is a different tool, I believe it runs in the background. What RefreshForce does is modify your registry so that only the highest rate is available for each resolution (or you can choose lower if you want but I don't see why you'd want to do that). It doesn't need to run after that. And it saves the original settings if you want to restore them (you could also re-install monitor or gfx card drivers to do this).

i am getting a 9800, itll be here monday, this card is going in a friends pc im just testing it.

I just tried reforce, just reinstalled the monitor drive, tried cat3.4, 3.5 and NOTHING till get this §§§§ing monitor above 75hz! also tried refreshlock, same thing.

these programs are for setting gl/d3d/dx framerates it seems.

Reforce should set the rates for all modes including the desktop. Worked on my 9800 Pro anyway (cat 3.5).

Try turning off "Use DDC Information" in the ATI control panel Displays->Monitor.

well done lavender. installed ati control panel, turned off ddc, set refresh to 85hz and it worked first time.

5 posts, 3 forums and you are the only one to suggest that, or anything useful at all for that matter.

at leats now i know what to do to set up my 9800 which comes TOMMORROW w00

although im now scared after reading yesterday about some sort of stuttering problem when AA and/or AF is enabled on these radeons, and ATIs inabilty to fix it. I wont be happy if i get that problem and ill dump the card on ebay most likely.

couldnt work out how to overclock it with rivatuner, doesnt seem nearly as quick and easy as rage3d was.

ffs i cant even get the rage3d crap to work now, it refuses to work with cat 3.5's

isnt there ANYTHING that will just let me set the §§§§ing overclock on this thing without something being memory resident and witihout adding 5000 other options that the ati control panel adds anyway? oh and that actually WORKS

Thought you wouldn't like Rage3d...;)

Make sure you have the latest RivaTuner (12RC4) it definitely supports the 9600 Pro. Click the little arrow next to Customize..., select "Customize low level system settings" from the drop-down, and set it up like the pic below (with your own frequencies of course).

i dont get an overclocking tab, only an AGP one. i have 2.0 release candidate 12.4

Weird. Is it a 9600 Pro or non-Pro?

Well you could try RadClocker then, it's the o/c'ing part of RadLinker without all the other stuff. Just adds a clock settings tab to the display control panel.

its a non pro. ill try radclocker again.

*edit* radclocker did the same as rage, set it but had no effect.

reinstalled cat3.4, worked first time. something in them cat3.5s is not allowing overclocking with this 9600.

hopefully my 9800 wont have any of these problems with the latest drivers.

all i wanted to do was sort the overclocking then test it out for a while on moronstein. too bluddy late now.
