Hey guys iv got a very strange problem with my computer. A few months ago I upgraded my cooling to water(d-tek, a120.3, DDC w/ petras top, ek rez) and ever since that day my IDE 1 port is going crazy on me.

Specs:
Mobo - Asus P5WD2
CPU - Intel D820 (dont laugh, ill upgrade soon, haha)
GPU - ATI X1900xtx
HD(s) - 2 segate 320gb drives(raid 0)
Ram - Corsair DDr2 PC2 6400
Sound Card- Creative X-Fi platnium
Optical Drive- Samsung SH-S182M
PSU - Thermaltake 750W W0116RU

Now heres the Problem:

Every time i plug the Samsung drive into the IDE 1 Port(blue port in the middle next to the 24pin power) the drive doesnt get any power(cant open or close it) the computer boots up just fine, and theres one other very strange thing, if i have the drive hooked up to that IDE 1 Port the HD LED stay on constantly. This has only started happening since i put in the Water cooling.

Now the red IDE ports on the Mobo Work just fine and allow me to read and write CDs.... but apparently When you want to restore windows from CD.... The disc drive throws a BSOD (Already did all the research on this, about 30-40 other forums about it). Now iv already Sent in the PSU for warrenty thinking it might be the PSU, but it was not. So I was wondering if you guys could help me out.

Somethings iv already tried:
I plugged the IDE cable into the IDE1 port but not into the optical drive and the LEDs work fine.
Iv unconnected ever connection from the power supply and recconected, still nothing.

Thanks for reading through and thanks in advance for the advice

Sounds like the Samsung tossed a cookie and is out to lunch...permanently.

Have you tried swapping it?

well the thing is the drive works perfectly fine when i have it hooked up to the other IDE ports on the Mobo, i can read and write discs in windows just fine. As soon as i connect it to the IDE1 port, it just stops working.

do you have the cable in properly? Is the cable keyed?

This is exactly what would happen to floppy drives if the cable was plugged in backwards. Most IDE cables should be keyed to prevent this.

Unless you failed to leak test and water got in the layers of the board and simply never dried out then this really has nothing to do with liquid cooling but seems more of a MB issue or optical drive issue.

Things I might consider reviewing are possible bios issue or a problem with the cable. Are you sure that you don't have a jumper pin for a slave or master on the drive? Have you flashed the bios or reverted to a prior bios version?

Also how much is your time worth? Personally I would rather just spend 30-50bucks and buy a new sata drive and just see if I can scrap that drive to a local used computer store or give it to a school for the tax write off.

I just had a weird thought. Is anything else on IDE1? Is anything on the other IDE ports? Is the Samsung jumpered right for being on IDE1?

I know it works on the other channel, but it could still be as simple as a bad or flakey cable. You didn't mention if you tried a different one. Also can you try any other IDE device on that blue channel? Maybe update Board bios (http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us), even if you have the latest, re-flash it. Update the firmware for samsung here. ok i updated the BIOs on my mobo, still no luck. Then I messed around with the jumper settings, still nothing. Im just starting to think that the port has gone bad.

Ill try updating the Samsung Firmware after work, but because it works with my other ports no problem with the same cable, i don't think its going to work :shakes:

those IDE cables keep failing after some time. I got a lot of headaches tinkering on systems and XP installs to discover at the end that the only problem was the 80wire ide cable.

What color connector cable are you using? Blue, black or gray?
