Yes: Thru the VGA port on your laptop. If you have one of the new monitors with the digital connector: you gonna need an adapter.:yepp:

i am sure he figured that much out. If your notebook support it when you close the display it should go to sleep, then use an external keyboard and mouse to wake it back up. Then you should be able to use it.

In XP, right click desktop, properties. Screen saver, power management, look around in each tab. There should be one where theres a dropdown and you can change your laptop behavior when you do certain things. One will be the behavior for when you close the lid. Usually it's set default to have the laptop sleep. Change it to turn off monitor or something like that. Tada.
