what would you guess think the average life expectancy for a laptop is, 24 hour use?

2-12 years depending on Brand/Quality and how much abuse you give it

been crunching, and using it for music almost 24/7, used for cad and gaming for 3-5 hours at a time, and surfing when i am not gaming/working. HP using a 3800+

i have a dell and i got in july of 05' and the battery didn't start giving out on me untill the end of 06'

Like others said, depends on use and quality and how much TLC you give it. My X41 Tablet's battery lasted for about 2 years and it's losing it's charge now pretty bad. It can only hold 55% of its original charge. A gaming laptop that I use to have, had it's battery last for about 1.5 years until it started losing its charge. Of course the guy I sold it to broke it about 2 months later because he couldn't properly take care of it. But I think laptops can typically last up to 10 years or more if proper care is taken. Just look at eBay, people are still selling 133mhz laptops lol. Mine is a little over 2 years old and still looks pretty much the way it came out of the box.
