OK so, just to make things clear this is NOT a final or official statement yet. Just making sure everyone knows that so as to not dissapoint.
But, I have been talking with Ssilencer and will be contacting Asetek on the matter as well. I know of an excellent C/C++ coder who I have conversed with and said he would be willing to take a whack at porting the ChillControl/G-Froster application to Linux. Ssilencer has agreed to supply me with the G-Froster source (per approval of Golden) and I already know that Asetek distributes copies of the source to willing developers.
So, what would you guys think of a native Linux port of the software? I for one, as well as several others I am in contact with frequently, have taken the dive into full Linux desktop computing, and I for one think that this would be a wonderful thing to have :) .

OK so, here is the current deal.
I have contacted Asetek and requested a copy of the source code which I don't see why they wouldn't be willing to give. My coder has agreed to take a shot at this and apparently according to the Asetek forums, the port should be relatively easy. In fact the only thing OS dependent is the BIOS update call the ChillControl uses to flash new settings into the ChillControl board.
This is all being done OpenSource of course. And the only compensation the coder will be getting is a copy of UT3 I promised to buy him when It's released. The G-Froster sofware however, is another story. Theoretically it should also be easy to port, but I have not yet purchased a G-Froster controller and without a way to test the software (Apparently I am the only one that has requested a Linux port >.<), this would not be a very smart move. So we have decided to start with a linux port of the Asetek software and if all goes well with that, will go from there.
I will post back here with additional updates as they surface.

A native port would be nice to see, but to be honest most overclockers are gamers and game support just isnt there on linux.
You will probably find that those that use linux soley and phase are few and far between.
However I am one of those people and know the compile time gains that can be made from having a chip on phase.
So even though I think there will be very few people using it, I would have to put myself down as a selfish "yes please" :)

Thank you for your support and please remember this plan is NOT written in stone as of yet but we are going to try our best.

Pretty cool project.... but I agree with rogard, I think there will be very little demand for it. Phase change is mostly used by benchers and gamers and they don't run Linux (at least not for gaming or benching;) ).

I say go for it. Demand will come if the project is available.

Thank you everyone for the feedback.
And I share the same opinion. Once people find out that something previously thought to be hopeless is available interest might pick up.
My coder is eager to begin the project and I'm now jusy waiting to hear back from Asetek.

You should ALWAYS encourage open sourced programs. Now only if game developers would make their games for linux then I would have no need for windows.
I love the idea although I dont have the funds to go on phase change yet...would love to install the g froster soft via the synaptic :p:

Just giving an update.
The guy at the Asetek helpdesk is taking a lifetime to respond, so I'm registering on their forum and making the request. It has been done this way in the past and they have released the source code to developers so I don't see why they wouldn't.

I would love to see this done but also believe the demand is incredibly low. Besides simply gaming, over clocking our chips and benching them on phase must be done solely on windows to give an accurate comparison between clockers.
But then again....it would still have a cool factor of at least 56 Fonz's
ehhhh!

SoddemFX.. i use my Xe2 the same as you 7 day a week net Pc and games..
it has a Commando and a Q6600 CPU runs 3.6Ghz at a nice 1.35 vcore..
I Ditched the Vapochill controller for a Gsmaster unit ..as you can set all settings before you boot the machine up to suite your needs..
you dont really need a program for Windows or what ever Os you run this way.
My Kayl cooler is just for Hardcore Quad benching..it also has one of these controllers i just think Asetek support is slow even though they eventuually catch up with ya...
So maybe think of another controller guys and give up on the Vapochill CC ?????
Cheers Hori

We would like to do a G-Froster implementation however the problem is that I do not own a G-Froster.
I don't think it would be a problem obtaining the source but we need testers. Any volunteers?
I have ubuntu and live in buenos aires ( where ssilencer lives). the only thing is that I dont have a SS :S

OK, at last an update.
AseTek have responded and agreed to give us the source, however not before a few legal procedures, so unfortunately it does not look like we will be able to make this (The ChillControl at least) an Open Sourced project.
If all goes as anticipated however, we will have a working Linux port.
