View Full Version : Orange rings forming on my EK barbs?

I was checking out my loop today trying to figure out where the air keeps coming from (top off the res, 3 weeks later there are air bubbles again shooting around the loop - micro-leak maybe?) and I noticed my EK barbs all have these orange rings forming on them. The Dtek and aquaextreme barbs don't have any sign of this. Any idea what it is?

it looks like an oxidation ring, do u have corrosive coolant or a slight electric charge in your lines, or stack in ur house

My loop is just distilled water + a few drops of PT nuke + Dtek dye. There shouldn't be any electric charge in there, I don't have any wires in contact with the water.
If it was an oxidation ring though, wouldn't it also be on the other barbs, and not just my EK barbs? All 4 of my EK barbs have this ring on them, but the 4 Dtek and the 2 Aquaextreme barbs don't.

I have the same thing but a lot worse... it is on my brass elbow going into my pump. I havent had a chance to take the loop apart to see what it is yet...
Running distilled and PT nuke...

That kinda looks like D-Tek dye (the green in concentrated form) that has somehow collected there... I know that probably sounds weird but how much dye did you use?
Than again, now that I think about it... that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Odd.

When the dye was in the bottle it was green though... I could see maybe the frozenCPU dye since it is orange-ish in its concentrated form but I don't have that in my loop. I used a whole bottle of the D-tek dye - before you shoot me I was trying to get it to glow enough and a few drops just didn't seem to do much. Probably still way overdone though :brick:
I hope in the near future to disassemble the loop, neaten up some tubing that is too long, and check the blocks and such. When I do that maybe I'll be able to see what this orange rusty-looking stuff is.

I don't think it's oxidation, As Nickel Oxide and Nickel Hydroxide are Yellow, Blue, And Green, Not Orange.
I'd say it most likely some other sort of corrosion.

arnt they iron under the nickel plateing

That looks like Fe2O3 there (regular red rust). Could be because of an imperfection in the nickel plating.

The EK barbs are nickel plated brass, not steel, so it can't be rust.

Maybe what you see in the picture is just brass then

It looks like rust to me too... But that makes no sense...
stupid question of the day... did you use any kind of lubricants before plugging the tubes?
really strange for sure... but the theory that its residue from the dye makes more sense then the others IMHO
but in short..

ya, thats what it reminds me of.
a rust ring... but it indeed doesnt make sense.
but by looking at the color of the water, its more plausible its dye.

Nope, just used brute force to shove the tubes on there. Well OK, force but maybe not brute, I'm not exactly one of those and not very muscular :p:
The dye is probably the most plausible explanation, though why it isn't green like it was in the bottle I don't know. Also why it only shows up on the EK barbs and not the others...
Guess we'll maybe find out what it is when I drain the loop later on.
LOL... I dont call it brute force, I call it brute struggle :p:
but yeah, the fact it likes only EK barbs is extra strange... please keep us posted if you decide to drain it

will do, I'll probably drain it in about a week and a half or two weeks, once I'm back in the dorms and settled in with all my gear.

you should not sleep on it...looks like some deposit , you should check your rad...:)

Problem is I won't have time to do it until then. I move into the dorms Sunday, maybe this week I might have time but whether or not I have space in the car to take my extra WC supplies (water, dye, PT nuke, tubing, etc) I don't know. I sure don't have the trunkspace in my new car like I did in the old one. That is one thing sedans have over coupes is trunk space, and a cushy ride... but screw that :p:

I had something similar 2 years ago, I could just wipe it off, it was dye residue
