i think i've seen a few guys cover the sides up of their air heatsinks to stop the bleed off of the fan air...now, the air is totally forced over the entire fin area and around the heatpipes...i used painters tape...it lowered my temps by about 1-2C...not a whole lot but every little bit helps.

hmmmm, i got that the ultra 120 and i think would be an effective method on mine as directly below my heatsink i got a large passive video card heatsink which rises air directly into the cpu heatsink
will give it a go later today

Impossible, i just washed behind my ears this morning!
Yea it seems to be a great easy mod, also u may cover the upper space between the fan and the bowed shape of the TRUE, since air escapes there to: I posted a while ago this picture 2 @ TRUE mod thread. ( sorry for the dutch, but the pictures speaks for themselfs. And nice idea using paintertape Ace-a-Rue

 :ROTF:
You have to do that to the space between the fan and the fins because alot of air bleeds out there too

i did that mod when i saw it last week in the other post
temps do drop by 2c not only for cpu more air goin out the case
now i gotta add another intake fan
i plan on puting a duct so all the air goin through the 120 will be direcly from outside the case:D

remember ducts need to have smooth corners, edges or flat surface cause air to collide and blow back a little reducing overall flow. you can see examples of this in some cases, evolution of car bodies, home heating or extractor fans etc
i am planning on doing some sort of duct but im getting a new case soon so i will have to wait
my friend used some card which he painted with several coats of superglue after it was taped into place. the card hardened and was removed and he made a fibre glass cast with the stuff you get for car body repair. after sanding then painting he did a nice job. im unsure on figures but it did improve the temperatures. he had an antec case with 2 x 80mm fans ont he front

I absolutely LOVE this kind of heatsink modding! Lets see what else we can do to further improve performance! Maybe slap some small vga ramsinks on the heatpipes?

isnt that what everyone here is trying to do? or didnt you get that?

Very nice job Ace... I will surely do this when my heatsink arrives. This mod, with a pressure mod and MX-2 paste should, and better keep my Q6600 cool.
BTW, what are you using exactly between under your X bracket for added pressure?
As well, which fans are you using exactly on your TRUE and do you find the stock fan clips hold a 38mm thick safe and securely? If the motherboard was mounted in a case vertically would the same hold true? Thanks.

The stock clips hold very well. Right now I have a modded 120x38 San Ace on mine. I have it mounted to a gutted 120x25 casing and then the clips hold them both to the hs. No problems so far.

awesome bud, thanks for the good news. The San Ace fans are exactly what I wanted to use on this heatsink. I was afraid having one on each side while mounted vertically in the case would cause a risk of them unlocking from the clips only to come crashing down on my 8800 ultra below. That would totally be a cok in the mouth now wouldn't it?

I received my second set of clips yesterday from Sindwinder. I plan to put another one in a pull position after modding it to accept the clip mount. Of course with 2 of them on high I am glad my Stacker is heavy so it won't move :D

hehe I hear ya. My TJ09 should be just fine as well. By modding your San Ace to you mean cutting away the rib that connects the front and back mounting holes or is there another mod?
Do you happen to have anything under the X bracket for additional pressure? If so, what? I am still trying to find what the best thing to use would be.

thanks for the compliment...side covering was not my idea but the painters tape was!..it works great:up: ...easy to cut and sticks with no problem at all....and...you can pull it off easily to readjust the alignment.
as for clamping pressure for the Ultra 120-X, i saw another guy using a large size washer...that method works extremely well...my washer is 1 1/2" in diameter with a 3/8" diameter hole...i super glued it onto the brace leg...i centered the washer on the bolt or screw head that holds the "X" brace legs together...a smaller diameter holed washer will not work since there is a washer beneath the bolt/screw head on the X legs....a smaller diameter hole would sit lopsided.
the fans are panaflo FBA12G12U type which are 2.75K rpm..the 2.5 or 2.1K rpm fans should also be good.....both fans are on the Uguru fan EQ controller so in idle conditions, the rpm is down to around 1.6-1.7K...hardly even notice the sound even on the workbench....of course, i have gotten use to hearing "many" fans for many years now.;)
EDIT:...as for the 120 fan clips holding power, they work fine...just bend the pointer part (tit part;)) of the clip with your pliers so it can dig further into the screw hole...that will give you more clamping authority.

Thanks for the details mate. I still have to hit up my hardware store to see what I can personally come up with for when my parts arrive. Keep up the great work!
BTW, what is the thickness of that washer you are using?

I purchased a modded Ultra 120 x that I lapped to 2000 grit and the seller was using a Canadian penny with the center drilled out in order to add pressure to the mount.
It works PERFECTLY.
You can probably save some time and effort by just using a nice thick washer instead, but to each his own.
The penny works like a charm. (And it's copper....heh heh)
As for the airflow mod posted by Ace (Thanks!) I was wondering if there's any particular reason to use painter's tape or if it's just for aesthetics?
Fill me in.

well i did something similar to the Scythe Ninja B that i have , lowered the temps about -3C

LOL:D ...i just had it on the garage shelf...hehehe...i presume you could use masking tape or other tapes as long as it will maintain its flexibility and adhesiveness.

although this stability test run is outside of the case, it shows you how well it works for a Quad at 3.9Ghz...of course, the other part is that the processor is a "G0"!

did you find taping off the top and bottom of the heatsink provided lower temps then just taping off the sides?

do not have any comparison but i could feel some air (not gushing) coming out of the top of the push fan.
these little tweaks are going to probably affect the temperature by about 2-3C the most....but hey...every little tweak is at least lowering the temp instead of increasing it.;)

Has anyone tried this with a single fan setup? I'm thinking there'd be on net gain since the idea is to dissipate the heat... anyone comment?

single fan or dual fan, there should be a gain.

here's the effectiveness of this easy mod...besides doing everest at 3.9ghz, i could do prime 95 at 3.8ghz for 14 hours and 53 minutes...could have gone way much longer but i got bored and wanted to return back to idle conditions.
i did the prime for that long because two guys were not believing that everest stability test...so...i took them on...still they haven't produced any prime results for their overclocked "G0"...i think they are just a tee-bit envious of many sporting high overclocks on their "G0" processors...they overclocking at "B3" levels.
