View Full Version : Motherboard In The Deep Freezer
Hi, ive seen a picture on here of a PC in a fridge/freezer and was thinking of doing the same with some old parts I have kicking about to see how far I can over clock them, so it will only be for a few hours. What I want to know is, how can i project all the hardware from the cold? I guess the hard drive/power supply would have to be out side due to the negative temps. Ive seen a lot of you guys using vasaline, nail polish and foam - would this be ok on RAM etc?
I dont want to kill any hardware or myself :ROTF: Just after some ghetto over clocks
Cheers
Andy
edit *not sure which sub forum this should be in*

Hello :) A fridge or a freezer is designed to hold a steady temperature with a low load. A computer would have a higher heat load than the freezer can handle and heat up the freezer pretty fast. That's not too good for the freezer and in worst case you would end up with a dead freezer and a very hot computer ;) So I advise you not to try. If you want subzero you should go with a waterchiller or a single stage, peltier might work fine too if the hardware is old (and running colder).

Freezers are meant to cool down things that are warm but producing no heat. A CPU constantly produces heat meaning it'll heat up your freezer and overload the compressor.
cheers for the comments, ive found a few posts by ruggero who seems to have some world record overclocks using this qhetto method.
I have my eye on a vapochill case, but im really after a few records without spending too much money. Ive a spare freezer which isnt used so think im going to try it ( you have to be in it to win it) , all i need to do it get it to boot and run cpuz so it shouldnt produce too much heat, also the freezer is quite big so i think it should be ok before it gets up to 0c temps
Ive read about putting the hardware in a zip lock bag after to allow it to warm up so the condensation forms on the outside. Can any confirm this?

Or use lead the cables outside and place them on the freezer door. The harddrive for example can easily be fixed with a couple of fridge magnets... :D
I have seen this once on the Inet, it looked very Ghetto with all the components taped to the outside.
But I think this is far from practical, you can have much better performance with much less effort (e.g. with dice).

Well yes, you can either seal the unit and place it in the fridge and upon removal let it all warm up or you can just throw it into the fridge and then when you yank it out just give it 24-36 hours to dry out. I suppose you could get a few runs of 32M or 3DMark in the fridge as it'll have a large reserve of ice/frost keeping the temperatures low but eventually you'll kill the thing. Dry Ice or a cheap single-stage is the way to go.
yeah i have been researching dice as well, Ive found a few places on the internet that sell it but i don't know where i could get a socket A copper tube...
Also with dice how long can you store it for? As i guess a normal ice box wouldnt keep it cool for long.
Cheers for all your input... im just waiting on some ram to arrive then i can try a few overclocks on air, then maybe the freezer if i dont get hold of this vapochill case.
What if u would make own freezer, BIG compressor, lot of evap pipe, R402/507 etc, so it would have lot more cooling capacity than normal freezer?
And of everything external parts are leaved (hd's, power suppyly, cd...etc) outside to decrease heat output.

Ohhh dice bad idea, no heat capacity what so ever, just keep using it with your board games!
DRY Ice how ever will work well!

There is little in life which is cheap. People here spend lots of dosh making cooling rigs which still fall short of world records. World records require expensive gear in itself.
There are no shortcuts. Use the fridge to cool down a brew, then drink it while pondering your phase-change build......

You need to keep dry ice in a stryofoam cooler. It will last longer the better the cooler. Also use a cooler only big enough for the ammount you have. This reduces the area it has to cool back down once you open it.

Luckily the knowledge of the forum is free which has helped a lot, after researching and looking at past records I've got a AN7 mb and some 3200 ram for £22 from ebay. When they arrive ill see how far I can get on air... then i think ill leave them in the freezer for a while and see how that goes..
cheers for the help.
