Hello all

i want to buy an NVidia 8600GTS vga card to replace my ATI X600.
My sys config is:

CPU: Intel P4 Extreme edition 3.73GHz
RAM: 1 GB Kingston 533MHz
HARD Drives: 1xSamsung 80GB SATA
1xSeagate 200GB SATA
Cooling: 1 rear case fan
1 front case fan
Thermaltake Fan on Processor with heatsink
(giving seriously high cpu temp on idle recently!! need to be changed, maybe it's a thermal paste issue?!)
Multimedia: 1xDVD read/write driver

I am thinking of buying the enermax liberty 500W for the above configuration along with the new 8600GTS (675MHz core). Is it enough?
and is it good for future use with 8600GTS in SLI mode in case i wanna buy another 8600GTS?

I have 3 more days left here before i travel so i need to decide and buy quickly...Please help me :)
Thanks a lot

Yes the Liberty will do more than enough with that system. I am running the Liberty and I have a much beefier system. Great PSU by the way, highly recommended!

if i wanna upgrade to 8600GTS SLI, and 2 GB memory instead of 1, will the Enermax Liberty 500W still do?

Yes, it will be way plenty enough. The 8600's are very low draw and so is your processor.

How about the system in my sig and adding an other 8800GTS in SLI on the Liberty 500?

Sorry for jumping in with my own question here, but this is very close to what I wanted to post here :)

No. You'd be safer in the 700W range. A P4 and 2X 8600's is pennies compare to a C2D and 2X 8800GTS's.

Just fine. You could do 8800GTS SLI with that PSU fine.

Two 8800GTS's in SLI on a 500W PSU? You might be able to get away with it but I wouldn't feel safe about it. There isn't a single PSU that Nvidia recommends for 8800GTS's in SLI less than 600W.

You can do it, with a Dual core, not a quad.

one thing is what nVidia recommends, second is what is doable..
well, nvidia recommends 400W(?) for 8600GTS, and how much does this card use? 65W?? lol

I'm now running 2 8800GTS 640 mb in SLI on a Liberty 500w without problems. :)

Feels like we are goin over this again, and i agree that Maybe the psu will be enough with SLI and so on, but what are the margins then? your psu may surrender any time with the load on it with 2 8800's. I'll agree with those who say that rather be safe then sorry with a 700W, and get the margins, and let the psu work at a good temperature and not stress it to death :)

maybe you can lift 60KG, but for how long?

I also ordered a 750w PSU. And that got in today. :)

I just thought that Liberty 500w wouldn't even run the 2 8800's.
But you are right. The temp of the 500w is getting higher and the fan is spinning harder.

in 3d , the psu must really work hard?

does not a 8800 work over 200w IDLE?
imagine it with 2 of those and all the other components...gees heeh.
it must feel like sahara desert for the poor bastard heh.
