Hi all

I've been reading around here quite alot the past few months while I was orientating on a new system. I found much valuable information and now I am left with one thing I am not sure of: which CPU cooler to get?

Currently I am running this system:

AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+ s939 Manchester + Zalman 7000cu
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe
Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2
Sapphire X1900XT + Thermaltake TMG AT1 CL-G0076
1x WD Raptor 150GB
1x Samsung 500GB

Now I'm switching to:

C2D E6850
Asus P5K-deluxe (or maybe P5K-E WiFi)
Corsair TWINX2048-5400C4

Allready bought my new case and PSU: a Stacker 832 and a Corsair HX520. Rest of the system will remain the same.

Back to the initial question: the CPU cooler. I've heared that some of the big heatsinks not really fit with the Asus P5K Deluxe mobo, like the Scythe Infinity.

Anybody who can give me a little advice about which CPU cooler to get? I'm looking for one that is as silent as possible, since I like a quiet pc. One cooler that seems interesting to me is the Noctua NH-U12F, but I don't really like the looks of the fan on it :rolleyes:

I'm not worried about the case, cos I think every 'normal' cooler should fit.

The fan is what makes the NH-U12F so quiet. If you don't like the fan find another fan that you like and use that instead.

HR-01PLUS with a Nexus D12SL-12 or Scythe S-Flex D

NH-U12 is also good for low RPM fans....the fan, although quiet, should be avoided.

Asus Silent Square is pretty quiet. Cools well too.
e6300 @ 3.43 GHz, 1.384v
idle = 30*C
load = 58*C (orthos)
ambient = 24*C

I looked into the Thermaltake U120 but that's a bit too expensive for me at this point.

Forgot to mention it, but I don't really want to spend more than +/- 50 bucks on the cooler (heatsink + fan).

What about the following coolers:

- Asus Silent Square
- OCZ Vindicator
- Scythe Infinity
- Noctua NH-U12F + another fan (like the SilentX IXTREMA or the mentioned Nexus D12SL-12)
- Thermaltake TMG i1

Which one would be best choise if silence is the most important factor? I'm planning to OC the pc, but that will happen later with another cooling system if needed.

he meant thermalright ultra 120. it's $45 at jab-tech (get the low speed yate loon for $3 while you are there), total should come to about $55 after shipping.

^^it doesn't get much better than that.

From those, Infinity and NH-U12 (non-F) with a Nexus D12SL-12 or S-Flex D. S-Flex D is a bit quieter but does push a little less air.

SilenX fans are not particularly quiet for the CFM and like the Noctua 1200, perform even worse on radiators/HSFs.

For 'silence' anything with a stock RPM over 1000RPM is a no-no. Unless he has a fan controller...

And below 1100RPMish, the Infinity keeps paces and usually beats the Ultra-120. The TRU(E) fin structure loses performance quickly below 1200RPM. I *suspect* the NH-U12 performs similar to the Infinity on a dual core...

For low RPM-Fans the HR-01 Plus is the best cooler on the market.

HR-01 Plus sounds good to me. Had a look around but it turns out I cannot get the 'Plus' version in my country, just the normal HR-01.

Checked out some reviews, where I noticed the Tuniq Tower 120 is also pretty silent. That one got my attention now, since I also like the looks of it. Not sure though if it will fit my P5K DLX mobo. Anybody has a clue about that?

Anyways I guess the Scythe Ninja is best choise for me. Good price and great cooling performance from what I've seen in reviews @ Anandtech.

Now I noticed there are 3 versions of it around there:
1. Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B SCNJ-1100P
2. Scythe Ninja Rev.B SCNJ-1000P
3. Scythe SCNJ-1000P Plus

I guess the 1st one is best choise? Or are there any other important things to know about I am not aware of?

The Scythe Ninja won't fit on the P5K Deluxe (or any of that Asus range with the huge MOSFET heatsink).

You'd have to replace the Asus heatsink with something lower profile like the Microcool or Swiftech passive stick-ons.

Otherwise, you'll need a cooler with heat pipes that only go one direction, since there are big Asus heatsinks on 3 sides of the CPU. One such unit is the Thermalright SI-128 (although it's a vertical-airflow unit, not horizontal as the units you've been considering). If you want to stick with horizontal, the Zalman 9700 fits.

Update:

Found out that some people were able to place the Scythe Infinity ( / Mugen) on the P5K Deluxe so I just ordered it to try it out myself. Turns out to be no problem to fit it on the board.
