Hello folks, here's our latest review, a battle between the ThermalRight Ultra-120 Extreme & the Ultra-120 in the high end CPU Air Cooling category.

Some quotes from the review:

The summer is still here ( well, ending soon ) and the hot days are still here with us, trust me we're not the only ones affected from the "summer hottness" ®, while we really 'suffer' from the hot temperatures outside ( hot weather and hot chicks cruisin' how can your alarm not ring ? :-D ) our indoor entertainment/work 'friends', our computers feel the heat as well. Those of us who use the components stock coolers can feel the difference by the higher noise output sourcing from the lifted rotational speed of our cooling fans ( especially the ATi Radeon X1900XTX & HD 2900XT folks! ...no wonder the Prescott boys feel it a tad deeper though ) and some of us who overclocked our CPUs & VGAs with their stock coolers might ( most likely will ) have to lower our overclocks to keep the temperatures within reasonable ranges.

Some of us might want to find a better solution to cool their components better and reduce the noise generated by the cooling equipment, or just lower the noise generated.
That's why after-market coolers ( HSFs - HeatSink with Fan ) exist, to make our...components life better and let us work in a quieter environment ( at least that's what they should be looking to design ).
There are several ways to cool down a computer component, different types of cooling 'devices'...

Well, here's how we tested the coolers:

We've set up our hardware on our open air bench, with the motherboard being on top, and all the rest components far away ( to isolate the motherboard & the cooler from external heat ), we placed the system in the test room and let it cool down ( the room temperature remained stable at 68F ( 20C ) from the beginning to the end of the test ) for 15 minutes. Then we booted it up, and let it idle in Windows for 15 minutes, and at the end of that period we recorded the temperatures for both cores as shown in CoreTemp v0.94, these are the Idle temperatures.
After the idle test, we opened up BOINC and set it to run two Seti@Home workunits to put both cores in full stress ( Full Load ) ( 100% ).After 30 minutes we stopped recording the temperatures, and then summed 'em up to come up with our Full Load temperatures.
We would test the air coolers with more fans, but then again I said no, because people buy these heatsinks to get rid of any noisy stock/after-market cooler and have good temperatures altogether, putting up a noisy fan on these heatsinks doesn't feel right to me ( it'll probably not help as well ), so we ended up the tests with the SilenX fan only.

nice review, if you have time, I really wish for a quad core test too, the Xtreme should really come into its own in that field

I will be testing some Quad Cores next week for some friends and I will probably add a C2Q test to the review ;)

Nice review. Only problem I have is the comment about the fans. First, some would use a higher air "noisy" fan and second it can and does make a difference.

Well, some might use a higher flow/more noise fan, but that's not even a small percent of the Ultra-120/extreme buyers.
As for the difference...if I test the quads with it, I will add a high flow fan just to make sure...but tbh I don't think there will be any difference at all.

BTW, we used Arctic Ceramique not ThermalRight's paste, forgot to mention that ( adding it to the review now )

Wow, things must have changed. What happened to the days when people put tornados on their 947s. Must have changed to extremely quiet systems since I was here last. Just kidding btw, but I can already tell you that there's a difference. Just going from a 65 cfm fan to a 86 cfm fan dropped the temps 1C at idle, didn't bother testing load. And then adding a 65 cfm pull fan, didn't have two 86 cfm fans, dropped the load temps 4C from the single 86 cfm fan.

Just for kicks, I strapped on a 190 cfm Delta, didn't check temps but the stable overclock went up 100mhz on the POS cpu I have atm, but who could stand the noise unless you were just benching for a short period.

The point is, of course it makes a difference. Whether it affects your overclock would depend on the cpu, multiple other factors, and your overall goal

I haven't read 2 pages of that review and I'm already in love with it. Humor plus review equals ability to capture safe's attention like never before, brilliant.

:werd: ive been trying to refine my review process also, ive had a few people get rather pissed off about the style of my reviews because i write the reviews in the way that i talk in real life lol

Its an excellent review BenchZowner, gives some great insight ive actually wondered about myself, thanks for posting.

I enjoyed the review as well. If I stick with air cooling I am probably going with the ultra 120 extreme. Any guesstimates on how cooler it would run versus my Scythe Mine? I would use the same fan which is an Antec Tri Cool on high.

Thanks,
Jared

Next week we will be gathering more coolers to run a round up.
I'll make sure we'll use more fans next time, and lots of coolers from various manufacturers.

Glad you enjoyed the review ;)

P.S. Infinity is better than the Mine, the Infinity loses against the U120e, so it should be more than ~10C lower :D

I personally wouldn't mind some of that
