I received my new GPU containers yesterday from Finnish container maker Ilkkahy:

I found my previous GPU containers from my office and some nice images and screenshots from my hard drive:

My first GPU container was actually made of aluminum heatsink and tube but unfortunately unit is nowadays missing.

It was a year 2002 and two Finnish overclockers were holding top spots on Futuremark's 3DMark2001 Hall of Fame list.

Later that year it was a tight battle against Japanese Holicho and OPPAINTER with Radeon 9700 Pros:

Next one was solid copper container which was actually just a huge piece of copper and one hole drilled in the middle (unit on left). I'm not claiming it to be the first solid GPU container but possible one of the first ones. This unit was manufactured in 2004:

Me, Kamu and Macci used this unit for 3DMark03 WR with Radeon X800 XT: 16774

Unit in the middle was made for GeForce 6800 GT SLI configuration (2 PCS)

Me and Kamu managed to score a WR in 3DMark05 with GeForce 6800 GT SLI and later with GeForce 6800 Ultra configuration.

Nice memories.. but lets see how these new units will perform QX6850 and GeForce 8800 Ultras ;)

Ah what a nice flashback :)

I really hope that there will be a definitive history of extreme overclocking and benching written - soon. The problem with the digital age is that images and records (the non world type) are lost each time a HDD fails or reformatted. Thank you for sharing these images with us as well as the memories.

lovely thing to look back at Sampsa :D
You where/are one of the inspirations for the guys here in denmark ;)

I actually forgot my recent solid-aluminum GPU containers which I've been using with GeForce 8800 GTX SLI, Radeon HD 2900 XT and GeForce 8800 Ultra SLI:

what do i spy with my little eye.. hahah those pots are very well know in the muropaketti ocing tests/runs.. great stuff Sampsa
the Finnish overclocking scene would be very poor with out your (and the rest of the staff at muropaketti) contribution.

What sets you Finnish guys apart IMHO is that you guys were doing LN2 and dry ice for 3D while the rest of the world was shunning it or scared of what we call real benching these days. Now look at the way things are. A step ahead of the curve, but the rest of the world has now caught up. ;) It's interesting how large the gaps in scores were in those days, these days the top of the ORB is usually extremely tight.

And I think no matter how much I do this, I'll never get the balls to pull something like this off: :p:

I am no1 here to say anything but its shows how ahead you guys were, just as Gautam mentioned. Specially after just having done whole LN2 thing in July with Shamino.

The new units are fantastic man :) kudos to the designer!
I have a similiar gpu pot upcoming to be honest and i was wondering how you feel about yours already?
It can handle X2900xt? :D

All those pots looks very good Sampsa :D.

Ilkkahy keep up the good work ;).

Thanks for the nice words. I know that with those containers you have to slush dryice but they are pretty effective. Here is couple of pics from the internals of the containers too:

This goes offtopic but here is next experimental container bottom im going to test with dryice in 160w bench:

Is it more expensive to make the GPU containers with a drill press instead of a lathe?

ilkkahy
08-16-2007, 01:20 PM
Im not sure what you mean but for example with the gpu containers i had to use milling, drilling and lathe. And if you gave that cpu container plan to real machinist it would cost a small fortune as it was quite lot of work. Its cheeper to make container just with lathe but i dont think thats very intresting or innovative.

It's not interesting or innovative, but we don't all have the tools to do the work ourselves. I think I've got some good ideas for GPU pots, one of which involves using a drill press, but depending on cost it's not really feasible.
