fresh winXP MCE install, EXTREMELY SLOW!!

first off, rig specs:

- A64 3200+ venice @ stock (2.0GHz)
- ECS K8T890A motherboard
- 2x512 corsair value ram pc3200 @ stock
- 30gb ide hdd
- nvidia geforce 6200 pci-e
- ide dvd-rom
- sata lightscribe dvd-rw
- 400w modular psu
- tt mini typhoon

all settings at stock.

i installed the os. then i installed my wireless drivers. from there, i did all windows updates. after that, i downloaded the latest drivers for the chipset, audio, and video card. i nstalled them in that order after all windows updates were performed. then, i downloaded norton antivirus (free for army soldiers, latest version)

after i installed the video card driver and rebooted (i chose yes whenever asked to reboot, which was about 10 times while doing updates and installing drivers), and thats when it started acting slow as hell. internet is slow, and pc itself is slow. i scanned the rig with the norton and it found nothing. a few times i found some weird applications running, such as glb2fe.tmp, and two svchost files running simultaneously. i have never encountered this kind of behavior before, and, like many of you, have built countless rigs and done countless os installs. any help, advice, free software reccomendations would be appreciated. right nop, i am at a loss, and quite frustrated.

well you chose about the slowest hard drive you could find

the glb2fe.tmp program is simply an installer doing its thing after you rebooted.

the slowness after the video drivers odd but not unheard off.
uninstall them and any other oddball drivers.
ok WAIT go into device manager and check your IRQ settings.
if the video card and wireless card are sharing the same IRQ, move the wireless card to a different PCI slot.


then get rid of that mother f-ing norton and go download the "free for everyone" AVG Antivirus

norton will bring any system to a crawl and it sucks like a vietnamese street walker at a G.I. convention. (no offense meant, i love my vietnamese friends both male and female, ok i love the female ones more lol)

hmm what else....

this is the order i do things on my pc

install windows
install mobo drivers
install NIC if the mobo drivers dont include it
do ALLLLLLLLL windows updates, i mean until there are none left
NEVER install hardware drivers from windows update
Install sound drivers
Install Video Drivers
Install AVG Anti Virus
Install everything else.


lastly unless you have a TV tuner and are using it as a media center why are you installing Windows MCE ?
its not a bad thing per say but just curious.

lastly when all else fails

reload windows and go get yourself a faster hard drive

i will check the irq setting. i do, in fact, have a tv tuner setup in this rig, so that is the reason for MCE. also, this rig is built of parts i had latying around, and since i had an old crappy ide hdd, i just used it. i will dl avg as well and try it. thanks

dl'ing spybot now, as well. and that log. also, just a note, when windows loads, that black screen with the slide bar that keeps going across, it normally takes, like, 3 passes and windows is loaded. mine takes like 50 passes, approx 3 or 4 minutes, then goes into windows. i cleared cmos again, and it seemed to help a little, but my internet is still dog slow. i have 3meg service, by the way

Yes, Norton is junk, but once you uninstall it, Norton files are still floating around on your hard disk. Might wanna reformat your hard disk to get rid of these entire Norton files.

I second that, I suggest that you try Antivir http://www.free-av.com/
it is the best free anti-virus tool available and its paid edition is second only to Nod32

extremely slow hard drive, overloaded hardware with possible irq issues, drivers that could be clashing, and a wifi card that could very well be killing it all depending on the make and model of the card, and its drivers.

i do wifi for a living and believe me some wifi card will choke a system becuase of the hardware and craptacular drivers.

its up to you to decide though.

yank the wifi card and the tv tuner and see what happens.

i also just realised if media center has or hasnt been set up it very well could be attempting to crab TV listings etc. from the tuner which could very well slow the system down or the internet as it drives to find info about the shows.
i am rather unfamiliar with MSE in regards to how the OS treats the tuner when its not currently running.
i'll let you figure that one out.

I suggest you download and install Kaspersky Anti-Virus (http://www.filehippo.com/download/file/4055156dede52f51e57795e0378ee2e7f88c9b4235468d9583 6d4149f34b04fc/) first before you install anything such as drivers, applications, etc.

Or you could use Astra IM (http://www.astra.im/) if you have an Astra ID.

by the way, while doing an ntfs format of my 30gb hdd, it came up with bad sectors. now, im not sure if that is the source of my slow rig, but i am gonna get a different hdd, and still follow the steps yall helped me with.
