32bit for intel and 64 for amd
the amd gets a huge boost from 64 bit while the intel dosnt get a boost, and the 64bit can drive u crazy trying to get drivers for peripherals so its not worth it unless u get a boost in performance like the amd dose
also with vista u can run 4gb of ram in 32 bit

From what I understand you need a 64bit OS to be able to USE more then 3gigs of ram, be it XP Pro 64bit or Vista 64bit. As far as AMD running a 64bit OS better then Intel, Im not sure I believe that at all. My Core 2 Intel should run a 64bit OS AS good as any comparable AMD CPU, IF not better.

i didnt say that the amd was faster (they are faster at 64 bit data processing not gaming), i said it gets a performance boost while the intel dosnt
and on the 4gb
a maximum of 4GB RAM support on 32-bit editions (up to 128GB RAM on some 64-bit editions)

i couldent find the chard from microsoft on max cores and memory per vershion but its 4gb on 32 vista, xp has a max of 3gb, through havening 4 swaps of ram were 3 can be enabled offering 3gb max at atime

Not that I'm an expert in any of this, but was on Microsofts forum the other day and the 32bit version of Vista was giving many people problems recognizing 4G of ram. It would only read it as 3.5G. There was a question of if the "lost" .5G was being used still, but the conscencious seemed to be that it was lost and not used by the OS

It's not "lost", it's used by the OS for addressing. Currently PAE is broken in 32 bit XP and Vista. Server 2003 standard and above do not have this problem.

Oh man. Dude, I'm not stalking you, but in another thread today you said:
"and x64 dosnt really have driver issues and its more reliable than x86 since x64 is on the server kenal"
but now you are saying just the opposite.
And also, to state Intel go 32bit, AMD go 64bit is pretty 'out there' too.
And, 32bit Vista cannot use all of your installed 4gb of ram. 64bit Visata can.
You really should stop posting for awhile and work harder on the MS certification you are struggling with.

Technically, the ram from your vid cards, and any other ram is added to the pool of ram to be addressed by the OS. Notice I didn't say 'used' by the OS. So, if you have a 512mb vid card and 4 gb ram installed in the mobo slots, the OS will report around 3.5gb ram available since even though the OS cannot directly use the vid ram for storage, it still has to figure it into the ram address table.

I have seen some people have problems with 4gig of ram cuz some boards are picky.

I am not going to go into technical reasons, however, when i use x64 everything opens up in a snip. Games run really smooth. Haven't had any driver issues so far.
When your processor has the abillity to process x64, why not take advantage of it?

I had Vista on my new computer i bought 3 days ago. Its a great operationg system but there is so much unsupported hardware out there for it. I have xfi gamers pro sound card and now its a paper weight! I got so annoyed today I went out bought XP PRo and tried to install it. But vista wont let me!! I was Like OMG!! Even if you set it up in bios to boot from cd it wont work!
Eventually figured it out that you hit the F12 key on boot bios screen ( the one where you normally hit DEL for bios screen) and then select boot device. Yes id like to move over to it but with more driver support.

the only reason to get vista x86 would be if u say got it free from msdn and they didnt have the 64bit up and then u got ur account suspended by the school/work for summer vacation, or no longer needing to test vista
and when u do the move to vista the beta windows update catalog is ur best friend, just not for sound or video sinc they changed from d3d sound to open al audio witch will sound better in games and for music and such if any1 gets good drivers out

BTW:
If you own a copy of 32bit Vista software and license, you also own a 64bit license... you just need the media, which can be obtained from MS for the shipping fee. I figured this out after running Home Premium 32 for a while, and wanting to try 64.
It'll cost you $10 shipping, but all you need is the media. Your 32 license is valid for both.

Mine was retail... SO couldn't tellya about OEM.... That's the main reason I spent $50 extra on the retail, didn't wanna hassle with OEM crap and MS telling me to contact the seller if needed something from them...
Call'em and find out, or just try it. When I used the form it had to approve the key before I was sent to the next page...

You just answered your own question, Cap...
Home Premium 32 doesn't come with the 64 media, hence the reason for the alt media link. I'm pretty sure if you try to get alt media from MS with a OEM key, they are most likely gonna tell ya to go back to the seller (the OEM) and go through them. That's exactly what they do with the OS media that ships with pc's - dell, hp, etc... in other words-end user hassles

Not to mention that with an OEM license, the OS is locked to that particular machine (legally anyway, you could probably lie your way thru activation). With a retail license, you are free to move from machine to machine - as long as it's only installed on one machine at a time.

I have Vista64 coming in the mail Monday, so I can contribute to this thread.....I use my PC for gaming as well as HTPC functions. I'll post how my games run, as well as codecs, specifically x264 stuff. I have an X-Fi XtremeGamer, so I'll post how it runs with the latest Creative drivers. I heard that there is a bug that causes a screeching sound on the latest ones....but I'll see.
BTW, doesn't Vista come with both x86 and x64?????? My Ultimate does, but I'm unsure of the other versions....if so, then why not dual boot (if this is possible...) and see for yourself!

Here's a pretty good list of Vista media: http://www.royaldiscount.com/miwivi.html
I believe Vista Ultimate RETAIL is the only one that automatically ships with both 32 and 64.
I ordered 32 home premium retail for $186, and 64 companion media through ms for $10...
I only saved about $60 over retail ultimate, which ships with both... For a home sys, I just didn't need the extras in ultimate...
We all know the ways around OEM ;), but IMHO I think it's worth the extra $ to own the license outright with retail and not give MS that "little out" if you do have to communicate with them regarding the license and different PC's...

I just installed 64 bit ultimate today and it is a lot nicer than when I last tried Vista (32 bit RC2). Much smoother and lots of new features and improvements. I get the feel that every detail was thought out which I like a lot whenever I use any product. For example, when you set Windows to not hide known file extensions and try to rename a file, it no longer wants to erase the extension by default. In other words, you can just select rename and type in the name rather than having to type in the name and extension even though you aren't changing the extension.

Yea x64 Vista is smooooth as can be. I love it. I have played Bioshock and BF2142, and they both run as smooth as butter. I'm trying to fix a punkbuster issue at the moment, but other than that it's all good.
I think I actually get better performance with vista x64 than XP x32 in BF2142....ironically enough.

i think it was due to all the businesses that run windows and the specific software that they use, which more than likely would not have been compatible with vista, or 64 bit for that matter.
we use a certain RIP software, thAT wont work with vista. and that software cost close to 3000.00
for my personal use, so far, everything i need/want is working with vista64, including any of the games i play.
the only thing that doesnt work is my 6 year old logitech POS webcam, and i was due for an upgrade anyways.
so making the switch to vista64 has been quite painless, and not the big horror stories i had read about in the past.

sweet mouse huh... the only thing I don't like is the rechargeable seems to last only a couple days, so it has to go back on the charger.. so I had to get in the habit of not just leaving it n the desk and setting it back in the cradle. I have it's little brother the vx revolution for my notebook, it takes one standard double a and lasts about 2-3 months... the mx is more comfortable though...
Logitech is good.. the only thing that has failed with V64 for me with their products, is I have their lowend Precision Gamedpad 2, and the vista 64 profiler doesn't work yet. They tell you this on the dl page, but it's still annoying because it worked in v32... so I can't assign buttons to the controller, just have to figure out the defaults in the game...
