View Full Version : Ultra-120 Extreme not better than 'ancient' SI-120?

Just changed to a Ultra-120 Extreme from my old Thermalright SI-120 (the revised version of XP-120 that still uses a metal base and a hook-and-clip mounting system).

I'm not noticing much difference in temps between the two heatsinks for my E6600 @ slightly over 3GHz. Fan used is a Thermaltake Silentcat 120mm approx. 1600rpm for both heatsinks.

Could it be due to the fan fault (seems quite weak when there is obstruction)? Or my casing which is known for its cramped internals - the Antec P180?

I have checked my Ultra-120 Extreme mounting and it is very firm. :yepp:

Please advise. Thanks!

have you check the Ultra 120 extreme base flatness yet? because normally, they are either concave or convex and require a lap job.

The Ultra 120 Extreme will show much better temps when compared with a higher heatload. An E6600 at 3ghz doesn't put out much heat. If you compared the two sinks with a quadcore, then the difference would be more noticeable.

Just for reference, I went from a TR SI-128 to the Ultra Extreme and I dropped 10-12C load with my E6600 @ 3.6GHz w/1.47V I'm also using a much louder fan though (San Ace)

I'm quite surprised with my results.

I've found a review site (link (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=431&type=expert&pid=4)) which has some figures for the older Ultra-120 and the older brother of the SI-120, the XP-120. The Ultra-120 is performs much better than the XP-120 using about the same fan speed, so it should be the same case with the Ultra Extreme and the SI-120. :shakes:

Sounds like your Ultra120X doesnt have a flat base for contact with the IHS, try lapping it down to the copper, and flat.
