Heya!

In Windows Xp I want to be able to sort files in Explorer based on File Extension (ie "mp3") not File Type ("Winamp Media File"). Does anyone know how to accomplish this, please?

Thank You for Your time.

in explorer > tools > folder options > view(tab) > unmark Hide extensions for known file types.

Thanks for the quick reply, but I've already done that. Maybe I should rephrase myself: The next step is to be able to sort files on file extension (in explorer). In explorer we've already got categories such as "Name", "Size" and "Modified". What I want is also a "File Extension" category, as the "Type" category treats .exe as "Application", directories as "Folder", .mp3 as "Winamp Media File", etc. That's what I'm trying to ask.

isn't type the requested column ?No. Type doesn't consistently display file extension, sometimes (more often than not, especially when it comes to the files I'm looking for) it displays several different file extensions as the same "type". Ie, MP3, M3U and FLAC are all considered the same type in my system "Winamp media file". This is not what I want...

thats amazing u can sort by type and it goes by what opens it, but u can stack by type and it makes virtual folder stacks by extension, thats not a very good move by microsoft

extension isnt even on the gigantic list of sort by more, they have like phone #, sir name, copy write status, date last printed and a bunch of stuff that useless
