View Full Version : Fan Resonance madness

My usually quiet Lian-Li V2000 + watercooling case has got this maddening resonance coming from it. I have 7 yate loons in different speeds from max to 7v. Ive tried unplugging fans one at a time to see if one is out of balance or bearings going out.. but the resonance is still there... during the day its not so bad, but at night trying to sleep is almost not possible.. its kind of like a subwoofer. it gets louder as I get further away as if it is echoing around my room.
I have looked into some sort of sound deadening, but if the case itself is causing the resonance would that even help??
below are pics of my setup in its current state.

i'm gonna take a guess and say it may be that d5 pump that you mounted upside down. i bet it is vibrating and shaking the case. as for sound deadner, i use some to line the inside of my v-2000b and it seems to work great at killing vibration or resonance.

Yeah, my first thought was is it the fans or the pump.
Cathar's latest testing on fans is showing the PTS Yate Loons having the least amount of case excitation of all.
Put a mechanics stethoscope on it and track where it comes from or unplug one by one, next I guess?

I will unplug the pump and see if it goes away.. that would at least let me know if it is the pump...

You could try that pump on a lower speed and see what happens.
Or higher if it is on low already.

Its not the pump I un-plugged the pump and the noise still audible..
I unplugged my fan controller and the noise went away.. So I am gonna have to see which of those 6 fans is causing the problem. So much for my nice wire job, gonna have cut all those wire ties :(

Turns out it is one of my Seagate hard drives thats causing the noise.. not sure what I can do the drive already uses rubber grommets with screws to attach to the 4 in 1 drive cage

Hehe, you're entering the world of SPCR (silentpcreview). If it annoys you enough, I'd consider suspending the drive. Not sure how your case looks, since I'm at work, but if you have room, I'd consider it.

What hard drive cage are you using in the 5 1/4 bays?

I was going to say HD. My Samsung 250GB caused reverberations throughout my case causing this woofer-like hum. I put it in a zalman HD heatpipe cooler that also rubber mounts it in a 5.25" bay (lots of rubber between the drive and the case basically) and it went away. Then I changed cases and couldn't do that anymore... then the drive acted up so I RMA'd it and the replacement is vibration-free :)

Try a brace on the mid floor. It's normally got the mid point tied to the case bottom. I've seen one guy put a threaded rod brace midway to halt resonance.

Try some Dynamat Extreme, it glues itself onto panels nicely. I wrapped my HDD cage with it along with lining the side panels of my case, seems to improve resonance issues nicely.

(Helpful Kitty holding panel so it wont fall :p: )

could be that the side panels are flexing due to the size, i lined some of these to the side panels where it meets the casing, has stopped the little rattles that i used to hv
