Well on Saturday i had to help move my lil bro stuff out of his apartment to our house, and noticed a guy who had a yard sell.
So we stopped by and i say a Gateway computer, and bought it for $20 wit and extra Ethernet cable.
I thought it was a pretty good by.
When i got home had to clean up some of the gunk on the outside.
Well i took the mouse and keyboard from our old desktop, and moniter and hooked up the computer, and it powered up, but didn't display anythin' on the moniter.
So i rechecked my connections and they were fine.
So after that i took the side cover on the case and inside everythin' was covered in dust, and some cobwebs.....
So i took some things out and cleaned it out of the dust.
The heatsink for the CPU under the fan had dust caked on there it was nasty...
So i cleaned that out, and then took everythin' out, and then took apart the case parts on the outside.
And now everythin' is apart in my livin' room. lol.

I was wonderin' if i could put in another motherboard in the Gateway case and mod it to whateva i want....
It came wit a Quatum HDD, an extra moniter PCI card, and an extra sound card i think...
It suppose to have a P4 that i know of....

On wit the pictures:

What do you guys think??
This is my first computer build up.
Thanks for any input.

Looks like it takes a standard mATX mobo. PSU is pretty proprietary looking, but you may be able to mod it to hold a standard PSU though. Cut the rear fan hole out to accomodate a 120mm fan. Oh, and hang on to that XP home license, you can reuse it on another PC. That alone was worth $20  Nice of them to put it on that plastic piece so it can come off the case without tearing up.

Did you try both onboard video and added in PCI card? or even remove the added in PCI card and try just onboard?

So i guess i need a mirco ATX mobo??
Yeah it is small, but it is bigger than out old school HP....
I was thinkin' of stickin' a small radiator there or somethin'??
Yeah i was surprised about the XP home license.

this looks old lol
^^
Yeah i know, but i'm leanin' towards buildin' it for my dad to use instead of Win98....:shakes:

Yeah it was at a yard sale...
But $20 wit an Ethernet cable was a pretty good deal i think.
The guy wanted $50 wit a moniter....
Where the front cover is i was goin' to put some LED's to shine in the openin' on the base.

Yeah i was thinkin' about a window. :D

Exhaust part of the case. Next part of my cuttin' up the case. What do you guys suggest on cuttin' this circular part of the case for the exhaust. Cause when i put the fan inside the case, i feel some turblence in front of the fan, and if i stick the fan outside i can hardly feel any air bein' sucked out.

I think all these new parts will work well for my dad.
He told me that he wanted a 500GB hard drive and i was like
Cause he wanted to burn movies, and make CD's and use it for his embroidery machine.
IMO this should be a really good computer for him/our family for the time bein' until i get mine built. :p:

^^
Not the cleanest cut, but it will work and air is actually movin' out of the case, instead of bein' blocked by the grille that was there.

Took me about 3 hours to cut the darn hole.

Next is the motherboard I/O shield i have to cut the case to place the I/O shield so that the MSI motherboard will fit.

The case is coming along nicely. I built a system for a friend with pretty much that same motherboard and it performed very nicely. I think you could get some faster ram for about the same price though, not trying to tell u what to buy though.

Thanks man.

Instead of gettin' the MSI 945GZM6-F LGA 775 Intel 945GZ Micro ATX Intel Motherboard, I was forced to get a Gigabyte mATX board.

Gigabyte mATX mother board is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128058

And the DVD burner is from Phillips which was on sale.

What are you're guys opinion on Athena PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817338008

Now all i have to do is cut a hole for the I/O shield...
Thanks for anyone's input.

Had it out, waitin' for the DSL modem to connect, and had to get a longer USB Type-A cord for our USB hub.

What do you guys think??
My friend mentioned that i could overclock the CPU alittle or somethin' like tuning the computer to perform better......

I'll take a night picture tonight also, even though the front 80mm LEF fan isn't that bright.

Yeah i was thinkin' of changin' the LED but i like how it looks now, it's grown on me. I just need to hook up a case speaker, and HDD LED.
