What processor would you use to build a new gaming machine, and why?

Core2Duo. For most games it really wouldn't matter but some games do rely on heavy CPU processing power. Two good examples are RTS games and Source games (CS:S, DOD:S etc.). Even though an AMD processor could supply adequate power you may as well go Core2Duo to really get the most out of CPU intensive games. Not to mention it is much more future proof if you don't plan on upgrading for awhile.
I wouldn't go for quad core because most games are still single core enabled and you'll get higher clocks out of a single core on a Duo compared to a quad. Not to mention if your running air you'll much prefer a C2D if you plan on overclocking. The only game I know of that will be quad enabled is Crysis but a nice OC'd C2D should still be able to run it nice and smooth. It will also be mostly graphic card intensive so I wouldn't worry about it. BTW most games coming out will be dual core enabled opposed to quad core enabled because that is where the largest market share will be for a few years to come.

No but for now you can run WCG on 3 cores and play stalker on the other
