A friend is looking at building a new rig for around $600. However, lately I haven't really been keeping up-to-date on the latest hardware changes so I need some help. Basically he wants a system that will perform well now for $600, but he plans to upgrade down the road when he gets enough money to do so. He has a CRT monitor he can use right now, so that doesn't need to be bought. He also tells me he needs Windows (preferably XP), however, it does not need to be right away since he'll be running Linux as well. He, however, does need keyboard and mouse. He's going to be overclocking the computer too, so keep that in mind.

I was thinking something along the lines of the below.

Intel E2160
1 GB RAM (need suggestions here)
7900GS
WD Caviar SE16 250GB
Pioneer DVD-112D
Cooler Master Centurion 5
Fortron 450w
Cheap Logitech Keyboard & Mouse

Any suggestions on a part in particular? As you may have noticed, I left out motherboard. Any suggestions there?

Ok I just pulled these prices from newegg:
P35-ds3r ~ $130
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 ~$ 120
2 gb geil ddr2 800mhz @ 4-4-4-12 ~ $ 80 after MIR
x1950 pro ~ $130
centurion 5 ~ $45
xclio 500W goodpower ~ $50
lg dvdrw ~ $30
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB ~ $65
total ~ $650

keyboard & mouse ~ depends on you
Since your friend is on crt, I doubt he'll need a 8800 gts or a high end card to play current dx9 games. If anything, you can always upgrade to 8800 gts.
EDIT: If you dont like geil, you can opt for Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 800MHz @ 4-4-4-12 for $80 after MIR at buy.com

Yeah these parts look really good for a budget but good rig.

What about the ASUS P5N-E NVIDIA nForce 650i or Biostar TForce965PT? Now he tells me he wants OS now, so I'm trying to cut costs.

p5n-e sli is a solid mobo, i have one with an e6400 running at 2.7ghz on stock cooler right now, and it can do 3.2ghz stable for 24/7 easily.
