Laptop for Father

My father is learning how to use a computer (email, news, maybe storing photos).

I have about 400 canadian in futureshop gift certificates that i was given a long time ago, but all they sell is prebuilt desktop crap, tvs, nothing interesting. so im going to use the 400 on a laptop and pay the rest with cash.

preferably under a thousand, 15.4 inch is ok. it does not have to be a powerhorse, but i want to get him something that gives acceptable performance and BATTERY LIFE!! 1gig of ram, 160 gigs/120 gig harddrive is sufficient.

hes not a road warrior, maybe the odd vacation or so, taking it to the shop, using it at home.

ok narrowed down to either a T5300 C2D or a TL 56 (the c2d is toshiba, the turion x2 tl56 is hp). both 160 gig hd, 1 gig of ram (ddr2 of course).

T5300 C2D will shut down the X2 guaranteed, no matter what model.
