I hadn't played this game in over a year and a half, but I reinstalled Steam along with all the games I have on it the other day, and i've started to play CSS again. I enjoy playing deathmatch more than normal play but i've noticed something that gets annoying...

Why is it so many now run round with awps instead of ak's etc? People just run everywhere with them using them at point blank range  . I don't mind people using awps to awp with, but it gets boring when almost everyone on a 20 player server is running round like crazy with them. Is there any particular reason for them replacing ak's and m4's now? Or are they just used because you don't have to pay for them in deathmatch?

awping in DM = n00bish. find another server. generally awp should be limited to 1 per team. if you're just looking to run around for fun gungame is the best for that.

yeah, it ruins dm. made me go play DM fy_iceworld and attempt to kill people with nades and a knife :p:

Just stick to the catwalk with the ak, easy to kill any awpers.

It is easier to get a good ratio with an awp than a rifle. Although in competitive play, on most maps, rifles are king.

not really, say if every single ct on de_cpl_miill is awping in a match, its nearly impossible to win, that's if they are good awpers.

No way! AK47 is king of cpl_mill. Just learn to flash/smoke and awpers are generally useless on that map. 3 awps in A = easy eco everytime.

Since I reinstalled a few days ago I have only been on a few of the usual maps... i'll have to have a go on de_cpl_mill when I next go on :). I bet there are loads of new maps they have released in the past 18 months :D.

Yeah on normal games I allways buy smoke to make it as awkward as possible for awpers. A good spot I find is at the beginning of a round in the centre of dust2... it stops people from awping back and forth for quite a while  .

I feel like noob asking what all those terms mean, but as I say I stopped playing over 18 months ago because I was too busy to have any time to play anymore. I've now got summer holidays so I can play more :).

gungame = you start with a glock and you level up each kill you get

catwalk is a place in maps, such as B/A is the bombsite, this would be cat on dust2 http://www.gotfrag.com/files/upload/pbmatrix_dust2_catwalk.jpg

De_Cpl_Mill has been out for years... it's a custom map by DNvCross that is used in many leagues.

A "Scrim" is "Battle" to say the least, 5vs5 most of the time, play 15 rounds on 1 side then switch other sides at half, you win at 16wins

and tbh, I dont really think smoke is nesacery(sp?) in pubs, since most of the time awpers are so slow that you can just jump out and 1shot hs them. What I reccomend is to go ring for some teams to get your skill back

and to the guy who said aking guys in mill vs a whole team who is awping is easy, you are wrong

i gaurentee if you play a good im/main team that is all awping on ct, you will not have a chance. yes it is easy beating a open team with rifles but once you play main/im it gets a bit hard doing it

i hope that helps

I agree about the gungame thing, I'm not clanned but before I go to my "home" server I play a few rounds of gungame to get my reflexes up to speed. Nothing is better at training you to aim for heads than having to kill people holding automatic weapons while all you have is a glock :)

that's why they invented the smoke....i'd tear your asses up rushing with a tmp against all those awps....that's why no team has more than 2 awpers really. Train might be the only map to that exception.

All I have to add to this is after really really trying to accept source as a competitive game with "constants" I found my self very frustrated and eventually back to 1.6 where the Hit Box is the character and I don't have to "train" on a new hit box.

As for calling someone a noob for using the awp... that just proves ignorance as nicely as I can say it. The awp has the least accuracy of any scoped weapon in the game it is all the most "random" and people who are good with the awp a generally some of the better CS players with any weapon with the awp requiring more accuracy, reflex and commitment.

So if you are getting mad at some guy who keeps op'ing you stop doing the same thing every round and mix it up and if you think you actually are "better" then him it won't matter what weapon he has. Any rifle can 1 hit.

were you referring to my post? there's a big difference between league caliber awp usage and pub awp usage. especially when its not restricted to 1 or 2 awps per side. but.... another reason i just play gungame, just run around shootin. it's fun.

What you've described 'scrim' it sounds like a PCW? Smoke isn't allways necessary in public servers but quite often in many rounds, at the beginning (especially on dust2) guys with the awps normally stay in the centre shooting back and forth trying to get each other. I often buy smoke nades to stop that from happening... it's funny when the nerds with the awps start winging on mic "omg who the f**k smoked mid you n00b"... I just laugh and tell them to stfu. In public servers though I allways go completely different directions in every round, hardly ever the same place twice.

"What I reccomend is to go ring for some teams to get your skill back" What do you mean exactly by this? I will have a go at the gungame one sometime soon, see what I think. It sounds pretty decent.

I don't call anyone using an awp a noob, i've nothing against the weapon itself. I just find it frustrating in DM when almost everyone is using awp, for long range and point blank range. It's stupid if you run round the corner with an AK and someone coming the opposite way with an awp shoots once without scope and kills you, even if you're spraying at their head with the AK and don't get them. (I got in to the habit of spraying at point blank range for things like that, normally I only fire 2 bullets at a time with AK).

I remember when I used to play a long time ago... they reduced the power of the awp in one of the updates, but it never seemed to make any difference.

I've played in main/im. I just played x6 yesterday in the eMazing tourney. Trust me, 5 awps is a sure way to lose against any decent team. It is very very easy to get picks against teams with awps, since CT's have to peak certain areas with awps, just prefire with an ak and you'll kill them everytime. Prefire sewer box, prefire cubby, prefire grates, prefire tree, back of b courtyard. Once you get to the REALLY good teams its less who has the shots (as everyone is pretty damn good) and more who nades better, checks spots better and communicates.

CPL mill is a rifle map. There are only 2 spots where an awp is acceptable CT side, and even then rifles do the job better.

Least accuracy? Have you tested what you're saying? It has the most accuracy of any stand-still weapon in the game. Awp > scout > ak/m4 > autosnip for 1 round shot accuracy.

Ringing is a term used that basicly means playing for a team that is short 1 guy that needs a 5th. For example connect to #sourceringer on irc.gamesurge.net

and look for people who need a 5th, keep scrimming with people you will get really good

The only 2 changes they've made to the awp since 1.5 is a leg shot is not fatal (at most 87 damage) and quick-scoping now has an accuracy penalty in source (though it still is kind of accurate).

Ringing is much easier. Join irc.gamesurge.net (the default one is a chicago server) and join #sourceringer and, if you want, #sourcescrim . Will need mIRC to do it.
