Does Vista Home Premium 32-bit have a built-in AC3 filter or do I have to download one myself? I'm using version 0.7b right now on XP PRO 32 bit. Would Vista accept that version?

I recommend installing the following (no need for silly codecpacks)

1. Get matroska splitter http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/ and get ffdshow https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/ (update it weekly and get builds done by clsid)

2. Get AC3Filter http://ac3filter.net/projects/ac3filter if you don't want ffdshow.

Thx. I know the ffd stuff. I'm using it right now. I'm not a huge fan of it but is does work. I'll go with option #2. I already have an old version running on XP. Version 0.70b. But I wasn't sure if it would work on Vista. To be sure I already downloaded the latest version.

Thanks for your help

k lite mega codec pack is the solution i use to handle most a/v

my htpc is connected with coax digitally to the Yamaha rxv630 and every codec works like a charm and automatically recognized on the receiver which have upto dts es.

plus u get the g-spot util which is damn helpful in v/a converting.

AC3 and MKV were the only codecs that I couldn't play. I'm building a new system soon and I want to keep it as clean as possible softwarewise. I'd rather download only what I need instead of large packs with stuff in never use. Like cccp, it has a buttload of codecs that i never use. The only one I wanted was .MKV.

I cluttered my current PC with software that seemed usefull and its performance decreased noticeably. From now on I'm only downloading what I need.

Where can I get them seperatly? Do you use a special website or do you look for them using google?

k lite is just a script that bundles everything dl it and see the files it contain and search them on google that's the idea. ;)

except the codec it contain real media and mov even flash catcher and wmp classic open project.

u need to tweak it good in order to see/hear all that's the secret.

I use K-lite full pack. You can just select what you want and don't want on install...

What's wrong with the Vista Codec Pack? Same thing as anything else out there. Just do a custom install and chose what you need.

As far as I know windows doesn't have native support for all common formats. I never use WMP for a number of reasons but one of them is that it just won't play some of my files. I use programs like Realplayer which plays pretty much everything. Its thanks to third party software that I can play many of my files.
