I just downloaded and setup the BOINC WCG client. So far I haven't run into any problems. Haven't customized any settings. One thing I did notice though is that it never uses over 50% of the CPU. Do you guys recommend any settings that I should change? I will be crunching 24/7.

Thanks for joining!
by default it will use 100%, BUT when you first start it up it might use one core out of 2 for 15 mins to an hour..sort of needs to "see" what you have.

I figured out why it was only using 50% of the CPU. I changed the preferences so that it will use 100%. So now there are two "hpf2"s running.
If you want to get high points, just uncheck all projects except FightAIDS. ;)

When I did F@H a while ago, if I was using say 12% of my CPU F@H would automatically use the rest. Is this how WCG works as well? Also should I leave the max disk space used by WCG to 4GB?
Do most people only do the fightaids one? I had them all checked but the WCG website said that some times you will be without work if you only have one or two projects selected.

I have just FAAH checked and the box that says: if no work for my selected projects send work from other projects" or words to that meaning..
Seriously, choose the projects that interest you or choose them all.
That's your decision.Do what your heart tells you..

4GB is sufficient, but I put 10GB on mine because I have nearly 1TB available. It doesn't mean you will gain your points. I'd say most crunchers, like me, only do the FightAIDS project. When they have no FightAIDS working units for your computer to work, they will send you other projects working units instead.

I am at the moment crunching two human proteome Work Units and there are 2 more chilling under the Tasks tab. But I changed my preferences to the Fight Aids @ Home and checked the box send me Work from other projects if no work from the aids one is available. A little over 4 hours until I finish both of those Work Units and I am kind of excited to check the stats after they finish haha. What time of the day do the stats usually update?

Stats update at 9pm EST..BUT it will take a few days for you.
This is different from F@H..Uses a quorum system. Work goes to 3 people, then back from all 3..That is when you see points..
So be patient and in a week you'll have an idea of what that machine does a day..
If it helps, I have machine here that has over 60 WU waiting for the others to do their copy of it.
The downside of having a fast machine.

Before I wasn't even thinking about getting a Quad core after the price drop, but now I am really considering it. Hey, it's for a good cause, haha.

you came to the right place. These guy got it down to a science..What board with what ram,etc,etc..Lots of good info here.
good people. Some good natured teasing but all in fun and done with a smile.
No ego crap in here. I think that would last 5 seconds and then most would see what these guys get out of their machines and walk away silently.
It's not a sprint, but like 20 marathons back to back.
When you hear that a guy has a 100 machines that run full load 24/7 for the past 2 years you start to get an idea of what is involved.

One or 100, all are welcome here..Think of a big barrel that we all empty into.
It's all of us together that gets it done.

This will give you a little better idea about this team:
This is the results from the top 3 teams at WCG for the day that just ended:
Team: Points Generated:
Team 2ch 4,912,326
Easynews 3,236,012
XtremeSystems 2,032,806
Now lets put that in perspective:
Team 2ch has 4309 members
Easy news has 5353 members
Xtremesystems has 414 members
Now you understand!
Welcome to the Madness!:D

Yes, I was using the registered members on the app.
Actually Xs had 133 members returning work yesterday for that 2 mill figure..

Wow, the people on our team must be really serious then. If I get a hold of anymore rigs I will definitely run WCG on them.

Some pretty xtreme folks on this team.
I consider it an honor to be with them.
I really think that if we formed a company with the people that are on this team with all the talent that exists here we'd be a fortune 500 company inside of 24 months.
THAT is the kind of people you've thrown in with.

What you should do is carry the BOINC installer around on a flash drive at all times. That way you can get any school, libraray, office, friend's, Holiday Inn, etc computers you come across*. Don't lose it like I did though:(. Oh, and, ignore this "disclaimer" thing you may hear about. :D
*Always get permission to do such things^
^Or just don't get caught

I have been thinking about asking permission to put BOINC on a bunch of computers that sit in various rooms and labs among my medical school builiding. I guess I just figured the admin in the building would say no but I guess it doesn't hurt to try. There are probably 75 P4 desktops that maybe get used 1 hour per day. They don't turn them off at night.
Obviously I cannot overclock these but what would be a realistic increase in wattage consumption going from idle to full load running BOINC?

I'm not sure most crunch FAAH units. I think there is a big mix. As the man said, crunch what your heart tells you. I wish we were still crunching Cancer WUs. Looking forward to the second Cancer project. Crunching to crush Cancer is what got me involved in Distributed Computing.
Whatever you crunch, do it like you mean business. And welcome to the team; its' good to have you with us. :)

I thought I was immune to WCG's piggy-bank-breaking magic, but it seems no - I just realised I was thinking of another rig that would inherit my e6600 when i get a cheap quad :O *I must resist it...*
*It's stronger than me...*
*Aargh......*
