View Full Version : Is my PSU dying?

I am having an odd problem. I just received a new mobo from EVGA. My old one died. Now, I have this problem: When I shut down the computer, most times it will not power back up when I hit the soft power button. I have to turn the power switch on the psu off and wait for the capacitors to discharge. Once this is done, the computer will power back up via the soft power button. During normal operation, the computer seems to work fine. The +12 voltages on the PSU are below listed specs, but are still within +-10%. However, I bought an identical psu to test and it gave me lower voltages than the one I have now. I also purchased a cheap psu tester which says everything is good. It just has the green leds so I don't really trust it.

Does it sound like a dying psu? Could the other psu I bought ( which I have since returned) been bad too? Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

What is the PSU?

And just fyi, the spec is +/-5%, not 10%. Minimum of 11.4, and maximum of 12.6.

Its a BFG 650watt. Yeah, I meant that it was below the 5% but still within the old 10%. However, both PSUs I tested were below 5% specs which was odd, but possible I got TWO bad power supplies or my meter is way off. As a note, all the other voltages are within 5% but JUST barely and that's on the low end of the range. I don't trust the psu tester I have because I think it lights up in the 10% range.. which doesn't do me any good.

Only way to be sure is crosscheck components. Phone up a buddy.

Sounds like a motherboard problem. Not PSU.

As for the voltages: the 680i board reads very low, I've found. I had one tell me I was @ 11.40V on the +12V. When I checked a Molex with a DMM, I was getting +12.03V.

I did all my voltage checks with a dmm. and everytime I get lower than 11.4 usually 11.2 or lower. guess i need to get another psu and see if that fixes the problem or not.
