Well my evga 680i decided to kick the bucket today.
Its not stable at anything, and hangs even in bios.
Tested the RAM on memtest, its fine, the videocards i spent 45 min swaping onto my other quadcore, it tests fine.
The cpu i replaced on my other quadcore on the P35, thats fine. So it has to be the board.
EVGA already approved the RMA after i told them it hangs on code 26, internal clock gen.
GAH... stupid 680i. P35-DS3P FTW!!
But yeah i wanted to whine. I'll be spending 4th of july taking apart my main rig and waiting for the EAR replacement board to arrive.

Sorry to hear this..
I saw a board last night that looked interesting at least to me.
Yes, supermicro..OK, I can hear the groans now but take a look and see if this would fit in with anyones plans:
http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Core2Duo/G33/C2SBA+.cfm
What caught my eye was this:Adjustable CPU clock frequency ratio
Not something you find on Supermicro boards.
Only pricing I could find was for "10 packs" for $1,622.27
FREE SHIPPING here:

Oh yea, chipset:Intel G33 (Bearlake) so it's penryn ready..:D
Ok, Now I'll go get my flamesuit on for the SM haters!

Pifft... only 1 cpu dave? for a SM board, i would expect it to be dual cpu ready. :D
Nah, im giving 680i 1 last chance. After that, im grabbing a X35 chipset.
The 680i is nothing like the NF4 chipsets, which was what i was hoping for.

680i so a very good chipset, too bad first boards (nvidia reference and ASUS Striker and P5N32-E) were so bugged. I heve never tried or seen the newer boards, i.e. Gigabyte's 680, but I think they are a lot better.

Your call, but for quality you can't beat the SM boards.
Now as to duals,not necessarily.
If I was building dedicated crunchers,I'd be doing the quads.
Just can't beat the bang for the buck and thats from a dual lover.:D

Sorry to burst your bubble on this one MM.
Almost all Supermicro boards have had this since the wonderful P4DC6+. You are thinking of the ability to change FSB. It is really the ability to change cpu multiplier.
So if you bought an X6800, QX6700, QX6800, QX6850, you could go both ways on the multiplier.
The DDR2 voltage is only 1.8v on this board as well so that would cause some problems with many brands of memory.
Overall It is a good board suited to a very niche market of buyers that want a Workstation class mobo for 1/2 the cost. If you are using your computer just for WCG and nothing else it may end up that this is the best board.

okey... My baby is now completely disassembled, and im on my NAS.
I had to tune her a bit up to compensate for my main rig missing.
Whats funny is my NAS oc's higher then my Main rig.
DDtung, you were right. My board was the major limiting factor on the X3220.
the P35 is most definitely a monster overclocker, expecially with my crappy X3220 chip which has majorly redeemed itself on the P35.
 Nvidia needs to rot, and give up there SLI technology to intel.

Yes, going much slower than I expected. A n00b that had a lot to learn and thats my way. Know what your doing before you make the first cut.
Then time constraints with this hospital thing with my mother.
I want this done as much as you want to see it done.;)

Good catch on the memory voltage. I missed that. Remember, I don't use any regular DDR2 memory here, just the FBDimms and they are all 1.8v( and 1.5v ot the buffer chip)
I was also proposing this board thinking long term crunching system.
If it has supermicros normal quality and it will take the penryns then I thought it would be a good option and thats why I posted it.
Then seeing a $1660.00 price for 10 of them shipped, and the upcoming buy of quads that will happen the end of this month told me I should post this.
There you go, Dave logic..:D

Yea, bought a MCR320 to replace the 220 that came in the kit.
Then issues over a template for the rad so I picked up a SS radgrill to eliminate that issue.
Then little things like where to mount the res and not just where but the actual mounting..
To do it right there's a lot to learn for a first timer.
Excellent designed kit though. You can see that Swiftech put a lot into the design and a excellent manual shipped with it.

I redid my loop on my main server tonight. I moved the rad to the top of the case and right now I am leak testing it. When the Q6600 G0 comes in I think that I will remove the MCW60 from my vid card and dedicate more cooling power to the CPU and NB. Hell I am not a gamer and my vid card is not much anyway.

If anyone is interested let me know, otherwise I will put them on ebay. I could use 2 for myself. .

wow you guys and your enterprise boards....
The only enterprise class board i'll buy, will most likely be a dual clover.
Other then that, this 680i better hold out until the X38's come around. Once those are out, im seriously going to chug this POS back to Nvidia.

You made my point for me. That's why I buy "enterprise class boards"..
I want solid and dependable and I want it to last.
Yes, you do lose a certain percentage of ability to get that last "drop" of performance from them and in a gaming system where every single added frame is important I'd agree, but in a machine that is to work at full load 24/7 for months on end I'll invest in these higher end boards and in the long run it costs much less for the amount of work done.
I'll admit that occasionally you'll find a gaming board that is a good one that offers all the options and is built well enough to take the beating of 24/7 full load work but thats the exception not the rule.
I'll give up that last 5% performance to get the stability and lifespan that I want anyday.
Hey Yoxxy! Do me a favor and see what you can get out of one of those SM boards.
Lets see how close it actually is to the gaming boards in terms of pure performance!

well dave honestly, for me i dont intend to keep a system for longer then one year. I didnt honestly think WCG would eat up hardware that fast to a point where it wouldnt last 1 yr.
I think i have a better understanding of how this thing works and goes, so i intend to pick up a dual yorkie on a enterprise setting. So you should get a PM from me when they come more widely available on vendors i can get it from.
But yeah... my NVIDIA is a POS, compared to the P35. Lets see how long the P35 will last on my current settings. The chip is a Xeon tho. :P At least that is enterprise.

Maybe I can answer it all this way:
If I was starting from scratch today building 3-100 machines I think I'd do one dual clovertown for the pure power.
I do some encoding work and the clover is tops in that and the speeds are incredible so I would want one of those.
The current SM X7xxx boards "should" work with the harpertowns and DDR2-800FBDimms when they appear.
All the others would be quadcores.
Best bang for the buck.
Now I'd want 3 years out of them so I would go with a board like that SM I posted on.
I try and think long term cost and I think thats the cheapest way to go long term.

I don't know. I got a cheapo S3 Rev 1and I've tortured it with Pent D's at 4.5Ghz to Quadcores. It still refuses to die running 24/7. Although it is sinked and fanned to the last.

While we are at losing crunchers, I'm going on holiday to the village without phone or internet, and my rigs are going with me - it may be a week or two till I get Internet there. So see ya later.
