Exactly they have to make there money back some how on it. While it does seem steep priced they'll make there money back on it in no time. Figuring if thats just that so say ~122-174mil is made off of it that has to be split from R&D, Patenting, Manufacture, Marketing, Shipping, and Selling at the store. In the end Apple might get 1/3 on that might actually be profit in the long run surely they spent quiet a bit to get it off the ground.

the cost of patenting marketing and selling are pretty mute compare to cost of materials.

cost of developing should not be too high either. trailing edge innovations worth a lot less than cutting edge engineering.

Have you seen the iPhone? It has a couple of reasons to not like it but it also has features that nothing else out there has, and does them very well.
