Apple and AT&T score big with iPhone launch
Everyone knew that the iPhone was going to be big from the moment it was announced in early January. Apple CEO Steve Jobs hailed the device as the ultimate in mobile communications given that it could function as a phone, a mobile Internet device and as an iPod.
As the months progressed, the hype mushroomed even though the iPhone lacked a user-replaceable battery, physical keyboard, expansion slot, voice dialing, A2DP, MMS, iChat, flash support, copy and paste ability and video recording -- not to mention that the iPhone was tied solely to AT&T.
It appears that all of the minuses stacked against the iPhone weren't enough to phase buyers who lined up days in advance to purchase the latest "it device" from Cupertino. Not even the $499 (4GB) and $599 (8GB) price tags were enough to keep Apple from selling around 525,000 iPhones from 6:00 PM Friday evening through close of business on Sunday.
Nearly all of AT&T's stores were depleted of iPhone stock by Saturday whereas Apple's retail stores are currently faring much better (you can check iPhone availability here).
Apple's iPhone launch didn't go off glitch free, however. Many users complained of activation problems with iPhone. The iPhone can be activated through iTunes and the steady rush of users scrambling to activate their phones overloaded AT&T's servers.
"We are working on any issues on an individual basis with customers who were impacted," said Michael Coe, a representative for AT&T.
AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel noted that a "small percentage" of customers were having activation issues. "Our first priority is to get them up and rolling as quickly as we can," Spiegel continued.
For its part in the matter, an Apple spokesman simply said "There are a small percentage of iPhone customers who have had a less than perfect activation experience."

Half a million in three days.. Sounds like the Core2 launch :p:
Seriously, you gotta admire Apple for their advertising skills if nothing else... They can polish a turd and sell it for big bucks, no questions asked...
Also, am I the only one wondering why Apple calls it the
the ultimate in mobile communications, even though he in the exact same sentence says it's nothing more than a regular cell?
Best Regards :toast:

Cause most Americans have no idea that the ultimate in mobile communications is
Heck people don't realize that in Europe and Asia, this phone isn't available because phones out there already do more things and do it better for much cheaper

even more.
i read today that the parts cost 200 dollar per Iphone (wich will go down in time).
So by just selling the phone they get some 300 to 400 dollar profit. And then they also get a slice of the service cost.

In apple's defense they created the mp3 market and won big for it. They set the standard because there was no standard. When apple launched mp3 players not many people wanted them... in fact, it took about 2 years for them to start selling the way they do now.
Apple took alot of risk, it payed off for them, and now they dominate the market.
Though that picture is pretty awesome.

The iphone generate a 50% gross margin for apple, and that's at launch price. It will go down.
Intel gross margins used to be over 60%, and even now are around 50%. If the people who bought the iphone are dumb and idiots i wonder what are Intel users? And AMD users when AMD had respectable gross margins.

I don't see how intel or apple or amd's profit margins effect the product or the price willing to be paid.
for example, you could say intel offers more performance for less money then amd, therefore it's value is there, no matter what intel makes on it. For many the same goes for iphone. cost/benifts=value, customer buys for value, regardless of how much money a company is making or isnt making off of the product. marketing 101.

and I think that's all about it. the iPhone has nothing special but a quite good design and a good interface. who needs all the features if they are complicated and hidden? isn't that what a Mac is about, too?
many people, me included, bought a MacBook, though they could've bought other notebooks for the same price with better components. here again, design and the OS are to blame :)
(hey, who wants to have Vista on his notebook at all  not me)
further more, I have the feeling that apple sometimes goes farther than other companies, as if their engineers don't stop in the middle of the process. though I have to say, even my Texas Instrument calculator is able to do copy + paste xD
and as kiwi said: other products just look awfully normal.

wow.. I did not know of their existence.. have they been released?

I don't know about the interface of the iPhone, not having even seen one in flesh/aluminum. Are the features hidden in new phones from other manufacturers? I haven't run into any problems, but i guess it's easy to make everything easily available if it doesn't have anything...

(hey, who wants to have Vista on his notebook at all  not me)You do know PC notebooks outsell Macs like 600 million-to-one? So it isn't about who would want Vista, it's who would want MacOS that's the real question.
further more, I have the feeling that apple sometimes goes farther than other companies, as if their engineers don't stop in the middle of the process. Well they certainly could have fooled me, seeing that the IPhone isn't exactly brimming with new technology.
and as kiwi said: other products just look awfully normal.
