I decided to lap the IHS on my QX6700. I got sandpaper at autozone and a glass sheet at home depot.

Unfortunately, this is not the result I was hoping for :( ... I used 1500 grit for the final sanding though, so I wonder if I should go higher. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

are there any comparison of before and after?

It looks fine to me. Do you want it to just look shiny, or are trying to reduce you temps? I have lapped quite a few, and going over 600-800 grit provides no improvement in temps.

His point exactly. People just make em shiny for personal preference, it doesn't make a difference in temps. It looks good just how it is. As long as it's flat of course.

Ok thanks for clearing me up on that. And yeah, it's flat. I'll let it dry for a while before I reinstall it.

Also, I used some brass/coper polish on it:

Nice and shiny! Id put the plastic thing that came with it on the cpu next time while lapping.

and use some tape to protect it a bit more from water infiltration

I threw it away

I think the die is very well sealed inside the IHS package, but I'm letting the cpu sit and dry for a day before using it, just in case...

Polish is only going to harm your temps. It adds another layer for the heat to pass through. You want flat, not necessarily shiny.

Yeah, I would recommend using some alcohol to remove that braso, or some ArtiClean to get it off.

LOL does the cpu work any more.. i mean you did use a LOT of water while lapping your cpus IHS.???

once you put the polish on it, thats where things went to crap.
you just added another layer of stuff to block the transfer of heat.
it makes it look nice... but nothing else.
lapp it down alittle to get that polish off...
clean it it, hold it up to the light with a razor, and make sure you got a nice flat surface out of it.

lapping doesnt to miracles.
if your CPU's already doing fine on temps... its not gonna make it much different.

Indeed my 632A has the same temps as before, too bad in fact as it runs slightly hot...744G and 630F improved drastically (5°C off load)

Looks don't count, performance does

Uh oh, I didn't know that polish could actually be bad. Do I really have to lap it to get the polish off? :(

No, just clean it with acetone and you'll be fine. When you get into the higher grits don't press very hard and the finish will be better.

I can confirm that. I just finished lapping about 30 minutes ago. I used 320grit then 800 then 1500 for the shine. I found that lapping with the 1500grit DRY nice and light provided the shiny finish i was after. Load temps dropped 5C.

And you totally got lucky you didn't screw up your chip with all that water. There is actually a small section of the IHS that does not appear to be water tight.

OK I'll clean off the polish.

Oh, actually I haven't tested my cpu yet... Let's hope I didn't screw things up...
