We have only had the phone for a few hours but we needed to get inside its casing, what follows is our dissection of the Apple iPhone. Please note that we're doing this so you are not tempted to on your recent $500/$600 expenditure, while it is quite possible to take apart using easy to find tools we'd recommend against it as it will undoubtedly void your warranty and will most likely mar up the beautiful gadget's exterior. Do whatever you wish to your iPhone, but do so at your own risk

Quite impressive that they managed to jam all that onto that small double PCB. That SIM card slot opens alot of possibilities... possibly other carriers? Dunno, the iphone community is going to be pretty big, and there might be a chance of reversing.

So, the not so impressive specifications revealed some not so impressive hardware ... who would've thought... (;))
You can't say much about Apple's engineering work though, they know their stuff.

What engineering? You mean foxconn/some Chinese company's engineering firm that was contracted by Apple? :ROTF:
From my understanding, all Apple does is hire artists to make the cases look all artsy fartsy, then they put down the specs, talk to manufacturers to make it happen/supple the goods(IE: Samsung for it's high capacity nand flash chips), then the mobo and the rest of the cramming is left to the Chinese ODM firms who basically make it for them. So maybe I left out some nitty gritty details but that's the overview.

The top end model will probably cost over £400 in the UK, putting it in the same ball park as the PS3 (£424.99). The contract will probably start from £30+ & considering it's 2 years it'll be longer than almost every contract currently available.
If it's 3G in the UK it will get the same coverage as my Vodafone 3G phone, ie crap.

Foxconn DOES manufacture their mainboard. But that doesn't mean its engineered by them at all. Then again, Foxconn manufactures nearly all the motherboards and video cards we rave about so it doesn't make a difference (not to mention XBOX's, iPods, etc.)

If you have a digital cable box in your house, chances are it has a FOXCONN system board in it as well ;-)

I have the Samsung u600.
Although you have to stick in a 2gb Micro SD to get some good space
(4gb Micro SDs are coming out this year), I love this phone.
I'd rather pay up ~$350 for this phone, which can play mp4, mp3, 3gp
and is ~1cm thick, than get that iPhone.
http://www.bongowireless.com/pictures/products/large/00001767.jpg
This thing is thin, sexy lookin and has all the functions you need, including
a 3.2MP camera... (iPhone has 2MP, pwuhaha!)
Literally, with the money I would have used to get the iPhone, I bought
two of these, one for me and my gf.
BTW, anyone realize you gotta ship the phone to apple after 2 yrs or
so to get the batteries switched? If you do it yourself, there goes your
warrenty...

The EU version is supposedly going to 3G so it's more a US gets stiffed on tech & the EU on price.

It's only strong in the browser department if you like Safari & can cope without flash support.

N95 is without doubt the best phone I have ever owned, its feature set is just stupidly strong. Web browsing is a dream for a mobile.
My only complaint is it can sometimes become very slow, but there is a fix for this I have been told.

I have nothing against apple, I own a 5G video iPod which goes every where with me. A lot of people say the sound quality on other players are better, which they probably are right but I'm not auidophile.
Just like iTunes because with my musci properly tagged, its library is very powerful and just shoving my ipod onto my computer via usb just auto syncs with no problems.
