I've been doing this for a few days now, and I have to admit... While reading about how you guys all become addicted to crunching, I couldn't help but chuckle at everyone's uber-geekiness as I'd reassure myself that I could never let myself get to that point. Well, after a few days of repeatedly checking my stats every single chance I get, I have conceded to the fact that I am officially obsessed with this. I just threw some cash down at Newegg a few hours ago to purchase an OCZ 700W PSU and 2GB DDR2-800 Ballistix, which I'm going to combine with an E6600, MSI P35 Platinum, and MSI 8500GT that I'm in the process of acquiring from an employee for doing some OC work on his new E6600/680i rig. This is all going into my ol' Tsunami tower which is just sitting around right now. Farm time! :P

Absolutely.

I was in your position as well RX7. I never thought I would get addicted. And here I am less then a year later with 4 boxes going and another a few days away from being put up. And that's on a college student budget. Trust me, if I didn't have loans to pay I would have WAY more than 4 boxes :)

I am not a farmer, myself. I am a computational power aggregator.
And, I did stay in a Holiday Inn one time.

I grew up, for the most part, in NJ.
Springfield, Franklin Lakes, Wayne, back to Franklin Lakes, and Fair Lawn.
Later on, after the military, I spent sime time in Madison Township, Atlantic City, and Ocean City.

if i win the lottery i would spend a bit more than 48 000 on WCG:D a while ago i priced out what it would cost me to get a full sized rack and load it up full with blades all running dual clovers at 2.66ghz and like 8GB ram each. i think with 60 blades i hit over $200 000 pretty quick.

Well with only four machines I don't have a farm but a small garden. I was minding my business doing UD since 2001 and I get this PM from some guy named Dave asking me if I wanted to join the XSAdmin Team for the May contest. I politely told him that I was running in my own little world but I would consider it. Now at this time I had scaled down to two machines for crunching but the offer sounded good so I took him up on it.

Well I can tell you that the subliminal messages encoded in the web pages in this section work, I am now up to four machines and just put in my Tank Guys order for a Q6600 Go stepping quad and ordered two more gigs of Ballistix 6400c4.

And since I DID read the disclaimer I won't be able to submit my therapy bills to Dave and Eric, damn disclaimer! :(

That thread that brought us together was a special one. I got to meet you,HardH20,IanY and a few others. All good people.
Of the 14 people that were in that thread, 8 responded to the PM's and of those 8, 5 came to WCG..
The other thing that was special for me out of that is the people themselves.
Talented, knowlegable and a plus to the team..My Thanks for listening to my sales pitch that day..

It's a hard thing to put into words, but I'll try.
It, for me at least, is a feeling that I want to do something that can help all of us in the future.
I use the line that I do this so that when my kid or yours, or some kid 1/2 way around the world in 30 years is told that he/she has cancer or some other terrible disease, the Dr. then smiles and says that there is a cure do to the work of thousands of people years earlier.
In the US, The govt started the "war on cancer" in the 60's when I was in my teens. The computational power didn't exist then to have an effect.
Watched my grandmother die a nasty death from cancer in 1966 when I was 14. That effected me a lot. I loved that old lady.
If I can help save some other 14 year old kid from having to lose his grandmother 30 years from now, thats all the motivation I need.

Thats the emotional side of this and why I think most of us get into DC work.
A desire to use whatever machinery we have and what little skills we posess to try and make a difference.
What I see now is that with the advent of the AMD Opty's and then the C2D's we know have that computational power thats been needed all these years.

An addiction, yes it is, but as I said the other day, the best one I can think of.
There's also some little bennies. As a whole you won't meet a better group of people anywhere than you'll find in DC work! Why? They are all "givers" and not takers. Good hearts and some fantastic minds in this group.
It's been my honor and just plain good luck to have met them.

You want to get your feet wet? Take one machine, install BOINC 5.4.11 or 5.10.8 if your a little more daring and then attach to the WCG project and let that machine do it's thing.
Any questions, we have the answers right here or already in a sticky.

Well I have been in for just over a week now, and am already formulating in my head a older P4 garden, just 3 machines as that is all the spare parts I think I have in my storage yard, wont know till I get in there in a couple of weeks. I am already working on figuring out cooling for my HTPC which is going to inherit my E6600, when I get a Q6600 twords the end of July, one bonus of moving to Portland, OR, already met a few chaps who work at Intel, and they provide a nice discount to employees, and these fellows are more than happy to pick me up a few toys. Now I need to try to figure out how to keep temps resonable with the 3.6 clock I have on the E6600, loads @ 43 on water, wondering what kind of air I can get in it to manage it.

The farm will be a box build like I have seen in other thread here, hidden in a basement room, out of the wifes line of sight, that way she asks me no questions I tell her no lies.

It just seems like such a small thing to do, for the potential of doing so much good. I just need to find MOBO's and ram for those chips, but fleabay and the spare parts thread will help when the time comes.

Hey, Dave
Can you please tell me what the energy draw /cost per month a system like mine will run? I know there are allot of variables so just a rough idea please.

Brother Esau,

Run WCG for a month and decide for yourself.
We don't know what you pay for electricity.
If it's worthwhile you'll know it.

Q6600 offers the best bang/buck in WCG. We're all getting them after July the 22nd. Hope that helps.

What about the X3210 seems little cheaper. And btw what is the cheapest working board for Quads..

I haven't got a quad, but ASUS P5N32-E on 680i was quite good. But I must agree that P965-DS3 rev.3.3 is the best bang per buck mobo.

Hey now, my 680i AR has been good to me! Don't talk like that, I don't want it to get all mad and decide to just burst into flames for no reason. :P I just got an MSI P35 board as well (for free!); I have both of 'em crunching. DDtung, I'm gonna come at you like a spider monkey! :P

Well, I have a younger employee who is really good at counterstrike source. He recently won a CSS tourney here in Kuwait, which clinched him a spot in a bigger tourney in Dubai. He won that one as well. MSI was there, and he and his team walked away with $6000 and a bunch of MSI goodies. Fortunately for me, he has no idea how to overclock a PC. ;) He asked me to OC his machine as well as 3 others for his CSS teammates, and was going to pay me $100 per machine. We discussed the arrangement, and I explained that I was looking for cheap stuff to build a DC machine. He offered up a brand new MSI P35 Platinum, 8500GT, and a very slightly used 6600 as payment. I picked up a 700W OCZ PSU and 2gb of Ballistix at Newegg, threw it all into my old Tsunami, and voila, crunchity crunch! Total cost to me? 200 bucks and a weekend OCing some machines.

Aahh... those crazy Counterstrike players. Would rather spend money than lose time playing Counterstrike. (I have a friend who's a big CS player)

Hey, I can play CS:S too! and quite competitively, I must say :) I'm and admin of Poland's biggest public CS:S server, and I never got even a free usb bracket, let alone motherboard.

There is a lot of money in Saudi Arabia. Hell, they even have indoor snow-skiing and snowboarding.

So look at it this way, in Poland, you get your snow for free, whereas the Saudis have to pay for theirs'.

You have to pay for motherboards, some get them for free...

It all evens out.

No, snow evens out with sun (less sunny days here). Forests even out with oil. Mobos don't even out. Company-sponsored gaming competitions or sponsoring OCers or modders is still something very new in Poland.

But to be honest I got my 8800GTS for half the regular price :D

dave, didnt that AC Ryan template i give you work?

You need to hurry and get your feet wet. If you wait too long, summer will be gone, and you wont need watercooling anymore. You can just leave your windows open, because i know it snows where your from.
